GREATEST JOY TO THE
SOLDIER IS THE RE
CEIVING OF MAIL.
t
Camp Setier, S. C. Here's a
gentle hint to the folks back
home. A reminder to the friends
of Tar Heels who are at Camp
Sevier and of Tar Heels who are
anywhere with Old Glory. It's
simple: Write !', .Write ! Make
it lonpr and often. If you do so
you will certainly be doing a bit
of your bit for there is nothing
that cheers a soldier up mure
than to receive a letter or even
a post card from the friends of
yesterday. Like all humans, a
sokiHr gets blue once in a while.
There is one sure cure. It's a
letter.
And to the girls. Stop your
knitting for just a minute and
write that young man you know
who has answered the call. He
would appreciate it more than a
dozen sweaters, .When the mail
orderly returns from the camp
postoffice, it is the signal for a
mighty whoop from the men.
And of all the letters those
that comesurrounded in dainty
colored stationery are in the
highest favor. When the orderly
starts to passing out the pale
blue kind and the baby-pink-kind
you would think that the
brigade was hiking up the main
thourbughfare to Berlin with the
Kaiser in tow. But there rre
numbers that don't get mail.
They appear about as cheerful
as the man who originated
gloom. So write. It's a very
little thing, but the biggest
smile producer you ever saw.
WHOM ARE WEI FIGHT
ING? '
. Sergeant. Empey has his own
ideas about the disposition of the
German people. He has had ex
perience of their!. Or.o of them
stuck a baponet through his
shoulder and another shot away
a part of his face. His view is
that the Imperial German Gov
ernment and the German people
are working along in great har
mony. He advances the simple
argument that the Germans
would not be dropping bombs on
women and children and hospit
als or shelling life-beats filled
with non-combatants if they
were opposed to such conduct.
He might mve added that the
Kaiser and the Sultan would
not be swearing eternal loyalty
to each other if the V Kaiser did
not approve the slaughter of the
Armenians.
The sooner the people of the
United States get over the no
tion that the war is to be. ended
by an npheval from within the
German Empire, the greater
progress we will make toward
victory. The war will be won
by fighting, not by praying
There isn't going to be any mir
acle. Soldiers, dollars and indus
trial organization are the prime
necessities, but unanimous de
termination to win underlies
them all. Sacrifice is still an ac
ademic word. ; It is difficult to
correlate prosperity and depri
vation. It is more difficult to
harmonize conditions which in
vite extravagance and preach
ments of economy. The desire
for profit rules still. How can
there be a scarcity of anything
when production Is passing all
records lhere is a striking dif
ference between intelligence and
comprehension. Great as are the
facilities for communication they
have not yet carried the news
into the minds of the peonle
Patiently we watch the snakes
curl on our bosoms. But when a
bayonet has been thrust through
us when half our face has been
shot away, we will know.
