THE ROANOKE BEACON Published Every Friday in Plymouth, North Carolina c. V. IV AUSBOX,.On tier f. F. AUSBOX,.Publisher Walter H- Pan; more.Associate Editor *1.50 A YEAU IN ADVANCE Address all communications to the Roanoke Beacon, P ymouth, N. Elutered scco.id class rail' matter ai the Postoffica Plymouth, North Carolina, under the act of March 3rd, 1387. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1928 There Is A Santa Claus Whoever tells a child that there is no Santa Claus is slightly at va riance with the truth Lik» Christ. Santa Claus once walked this earth. Again, he was like Christ in that he was noted for his great kindness and generosity. Such was his hold on the hearts of the peo ple that after he dird. December 6. about 1,600 years ago, the date was set aside as a feast and gift day, in commemoration of his life. 1 his great person's name was Nicholas. After his death folks called him Saint Nicholas. As the feast and gift giving day of St. Nicholas spread, the Dutch took it up. The nearest they could come to saying St. Nicholas was Santa Claus As the time rolled on. December 6. the feast day of Santa Claus, giver of gifts, and December 25. the feast day of Christ, the giver of hfe. became confused in the minds of the people, and eventually the two festivals were combined Thus the idea became established that on the eve of the birth of the Christ Child there comes out of the frozen North, with sleigh and reindeer, genial Santa Claus, with gifts. So America adopted St Nicholas as its patron saint of Christmas just as Father Christmas is indigenous lo Britain; Santa Claus to Germany Kriss Kringle to Holland; Brownie Nisson to Denmark; Pere Noel to France; and Mother Goose to Italy. When the wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child's manger injBethlehem at the nativity of Christ from various forms of giving the method has evolved into the Santa Claus method. Children used to. and do now in some foreign lands, use their shoes as a receptacle for gifts. Years ago Santa Claus was ex pected from out of the North driving a horse; later the idea of the reindeer and sled orginated; still later children looked for him in auto mobiles; now some expect him to circle the world in a silent aeroplane distributing his gifts. Certainly there is a Santa Claus. Just as Christ's spirit prompts men toward righteousness; the spirit of Santa Claus prompts the giv ing of gifts. -m Rev. Mr. Everett's Resignation In the resignation of the Rev. J. R. Everett as pastor of the local Baptist Church, the town is to lose a va ued citizen; the ministerial staff of the town a devoted member; and the church an esteemed leader However as the leaving minister departs for the Baptist Semi nary, at Louisville, Ky.. to take a post graduate course, the citizens acknowledge their sorrow at his departure but realize also that they cifm not stand in the way of such an admirable step in the educational career of. the young minister. -m Observe Postal Requirements In a former issue of the Beacon there was a new's article of an in terview with Postmaster A L Alexander relative to mailing early 3fnd other cautions for securely wrapping packages and legibly addressing them so that they could be delivered in first class condition even dur ing the Christmas rush which deserves the attention consideration and observerance of the citizens of Plymouth. Although it may be too late to mail your parcels early—yet the other cautions should be ob served to expidite delivery.
