40 County Farmers Hear AAA Official At Bureau Meeting Increased Crops of Peanuts And Soybeans for Oil Are Urged Forty Washington County farmers heard Tom Scott, state chairman of the Agricultural Adjustment Admin istration, appeal to them to grow soybeans and peanuts for oil during 1942 as an aid to the war effort, at a meeting of the Farm Bureau held in the Agriculture Building here last Tuesday night. Mr. Scott discussed the prices that farmers will be paid for these prod ucts and urged the farmers to do their bit by engaging in the effort to win the war. He stated that oil is a very essential product during this age and that it is very necessary that all oil-producing crops be grown. J Roy Manning, president of the county Farm Bureau, appealed to the farmers to orgainze 1Q0 per cent in this county and throughout the coun try. and he contended that if the farmers were properly organized and cooperated they could wield an influ ence on Congress and the nation in general that would prevent the slump In prices of products and farm land which followed the first World War. County Agent W. V. Hays spoke briefly of the value of the Farm Bu reau and urged those present to plant soybeans and peanuts for oil. County Growers of Tobacco May Vote On Grading Service -$ Referendum Will Re Held May 25-28; Method of Voting Explained Washington County tobacco grow ers will have an opportunity to vote in the referendum announced by the Agricultural Marketing Administra tion to be held from Monday. May 25, through Thursday. May 28. in flue-cured tobacco markets in this section to determine whether the markets shall be designated for free and mandatory inspection of all to bacco passing over the auction sales floor. The referendum will cover the fol lowing markets in Eastern North Carolina; Ahoskie. Kinston. Louis burg. Rocky Mount, Washington and Wilson. Tewnt.v-six flue-cured mar kets in Virginia. North Carolina. South Carolina. Georgia and Florida, have already been designated. If two thirds of the growers voting approve tobacco inspection, the markets nam ed above will be designated for free and mandatory inspection service The service will be inaugurated there on as rapidly as conditions permit and tobacco will be graded at no cost to the grower. Under the tobacco inspection act, all growers who sold at auction on those markets last year are eligible to vote. Ballots will be mailed to growers who patronized these mar kets last year insofar as their names and addresses are known. Growers w'ho do not receive ballots by mail may get them from their county agent or from the office of the coun ty Agricultural Conservation Associa tion. Growers w-ho patronize market' on which the inspection service is conducted have access to a daily mar ket report showing average prices by grade. With grades plainly indicat ed on each lot and price reports for the previous day’s sales on each grade, growers have a reliable guide for use in accepting or rejecting bids offered. This inspection and market news service is free to growers. Colored Disciples of Christ Will Hold Assembly Here Tire eighth general assembly of the Colored Disciples of Christ in east ern North Carolina, Virginia. Penn sylvania, New York and New Jersey, will be held with the Spring Green Church of Christ in Plymouth on May 20. 21 and 22. it was learned today from Elder Noah Boston, pastor of the local church. A. Roebuck. Certificates were issued as follows: Flournoy E. Cleveland, of Plymouth two tires for truck used on a mail route. Sheriff J. K. Reid, of Plymouth, two tires, for car used in enforcing the law. North Carolina Pulp Company, of Plymouth, recapped two tires, one passenger tube, on vehicles to be used in the forestry department for getting material to a plant engaged in de fense industry. Sidney C Smithson, of Creswell, tw'o passenger car tires, for mail delivery. Henry T Hardison, of Plymouth, tw'o passenger tires and two passen ger tubes for use in mail service. Held for Questioning By Highway Patrolman A tall blonde man. about 35 years of age. was taken into custody here Thursday morning for questioning by Corporal T. B. Browm, of the State Highway Patrol. He was first seen by the officer yesterday near Albe marle Sound bridge, where he w'as reported to have been for several hours. After making a report to his superior officer about the stranger, | Corporal Brown was ordered to hold him for questioning. The man gave a Pennsylvania ad dress and stated that he w'as walk ing about the country to regain his health after suffering a nervous col lapse. He had a photograph of his family in his possession and also cre dentials to show that he was with the Naval Intelligence as a transla tor of foreign languages in 1929. Visitors Here Mrs. J. D. Simpson Dies In Marlin County Funeral services were held Friday Afternoon for James Gray Simpson, 63 of Martin County, who died at the home of a daughter. Mrs. Andrew Griffin in Griffins Township last Thursday morning. Rev W. B. Har rington officiated. Interment took place in the Roberson Cemetery in Jamesville township. A retired farmer. Mr. Simpson was born in Martin county, the son of Mr and Mrs. Lawrence Simpson. He was a member of the Poplar Chapel Church, and he had a number of re latives in this county. Surviving is his wife. Mrs. Cynthia Norman Simpson; four daughters: Mrs W B. Cahoon. of Greensboro; Mrs. Vance Price, of Jamesville: Mrs. Andrew Griffin, of Smithwiek Creek; Mrs. Jesse Hardison, of Plymouth; five sons: A. D. Simpson, of William -ton: Roy Kader. Floyd and Lucian Simpson, all of Plymouth. He is also survived by a brother. Golden Simp son. of Plymouth and a sister Mrs. Vida Byrum. of Plymouth. Dis trict Secretary, Was Main Speaker A large number of Methodist wo men attended the Plymouth zone meeting of the Society of Christian Service at the Creswell Methodist church Thursday of last week. The talk made by the district secretary, Mrs. Glenn Pendleton, of Elizabeth City, was a feature of the meeting. The Rev. R. N. Fitts, of Creswell. was in charge of the morning medi tation. Mrs. R. L Spruill, of Cres well, welcomed the members, and Mrs. L. E. Hassell, of Roper, respond ed. Mrs. Davenport, of Columbia, made a report on the annual con ference. At noon the devotional was led by Mrs. G. M. Garrett, of Columbia, and Mrs. Enoch Sanderlin. of Elizabeth City, spoke on the spiritual life of the church. Lunch was served in the Cresw'ell school lunch room. A business session was held in the afternoon, when reports were receiv ed from various committees. The Creswell choir sang special selections. Series of Revival Services Now In Progress at Roper A series of revival services began Monday night at the Thompson Building in Roper, with the Rev. W Eddie Morris, of Kenly, Pentecostal Holiness minister, doing the preach ing. Services begin each evening at 8 o'clock, and church officials extend a cordial invitation to the public to attend.
