Republic’s newest and brightest Judy Canova starrer. "Sleepytime Gal", is showing today only (Thursday* at the Plymouth Theatre. Judy Canova is more than .just an actress, or just a comedienne. She is symbolic of the entire American way of life—full of good humor and courage in the face of any adversity. Her type of humor springs from the soil itself: it is as typically American as ham and eggs. Her troubles, and the bizarre complications in which she finds herself enmeshed, are as real to her fans as their own and she has the faculty, rarely achieved by a comedian, of moving her audience from laughter to profound sympathy in a split second of time. Charlie Chaplin is one of few other come dians whose tears are as effective as their laughter. Tom Brown adds to his laurels in the top male role, that of the en gaging bell hop captain whose love for his fiance 'Mildred Coles) goads him onward in his attempt to make a radio Prima Donna of Judy which will result in financial return to her backers. Cooperating with the brash bellhop in this enterprise are three engagingly wacky chefs. Popadopolis, Petrovitch and Brazuminum. played respectively by Billy Gilbert, Fritz Feld and Jay Novello. To this culi nary trio goes credit for many a hil arious comedy sequence. Other members of the cast who acquit themselves well are Harold Hubert. Ruth Terry. Skinnay Ennis. Jerry Lester, Jimmy Ames and Elisha Cook, Jr. A1 Rogell directed under Associate Producer Albert J. Cohen. 'Down Mexico Way' Latest Gene Autry Film Booked'Here -<S> Plenty of Action, Comedy For Western Fans Saturday Only Blazing guns, fast getaway action, comedy galore, hit tunes, and Public Cowboy Number One, Gene Autry, is the neat cinematic package which, under the title of “Down Mexico Way'', will be here Saturday only at the Plymouth Theatre. Produced by Republic, this is no "ordinary” west ern, but a lavishly produced saga geared for topnotch entertainment. As the title might suggest, “Down Mexico Way” has an instance of true Pan-American cooperation as its theme. Gene and his boisterously funny pal. Frog Millhouse—always played by Smiley Burnette in the en tire Autry series—have gone south of the border into Mexico in search of Gibson and Gerald, two phoney mo tion picture producers. They ultimately discover the two phonies in the act of swindling Don Alvarado, a wealthy citizen, by prom ising to produce a picture locally. With Don Alva ado's daughter, Maria Elena, on his si ie, Gene persuades the don not to turn over any of his mo ney unless Gibson and Gerald put up an equal sum, but Gene enlists the aid of famed Mexican police, the Ru rales, to capture and bring them to justice. Fay McKenzie, whose dancing feet and golden voice won her a Re public contract after scoring heavily in the stage musical. “Meet the Peo ple”. plays Maria Elena, the feminine lead. Highway Traffic Shows Big Drop Raleigh.—Automobile travelers took their last fling at pleasure driving on the week-end of May 9-10. accord ing to official figures computed by Statistics Engineer James S. Burch of the State Highway and Public Works Commission. Howerer, April 15-16, first week-end to feel the pinch of gasoline rationing saw traffic take a tumble of about 45 per cent. •'Magic-eye" traffic counters on eleven important highways made the count. BUY Your War Savings STAMPS and BONDS at The PLYMOUTH Theatre Auiry Westerns In Special Class Republic has brought the for merly humble western into the "Class A” group, with its new policy to expend $300,000 apiece on two Autry super-specials per year. The first of these, "Melo dy Ranch” proved the success of the experiment, and “Down Mexico Way,” which shows here Saturday at the Plymouth The atre, is expected to follow through. career. Bromberg has rarely played the same characterization twice. In "Under Two Flags,” he was a com mander at a French Foreign Legion Post. In “Four Men And A Prayer,” he portrayed a revolutionary leader, shortly after finishing a part in "Girls’ Dormitory", in which he was seen as a mathematics teacher. Too, one of his best performances to date was as the railroad detective in "Jesse James”! Currently in "Hurricane Smith”, Bromberg is cast as a crafty gang ster. Middleton has the title role as a young rodeo performer, while Jane Wyatt is his newspaper-woman sweetheart. Featured also are Harry Davenport. Henry Brandon, Bod Ba con. and Frank Darien.
