In the first ilace my ha hies are tn tight from âurliest infan(!y that crying for a thing will not get it. Should I âgive inâ and accede to their crying de- Miands 1 wâould lose control over them and they would lose their re- lor me. My rules are few^ and simple. rh»âV are roasonahle, humane, and I sehhmi use the rod. Iron chid rules will not âąwork in the ])ioi>er manHgement of a family uf normal children. They must he âąhistio hut not slack. (i« ntle suasion, I find, ia better than m11 the whip])ing, scolding, t'riMlt finding or nagging I have ever h**ard jihout. nnd hs it hriiigs results every time, it makes home brighter, swet^ter and hotter in ever sense of Ihe Word. Also life is much more [ileasHnt f>r mother nnd children 'vh*re the home is rnl(*d hy love. I alw^s refrain from using the eternal donâts. I honestly heHev(* that (lonâts work »i drsil of harm in (^verv home where they are the hy word. s«> have eliminated them frftm mv vocahuliirv. But about tahh- mjinners. JIv childrân do not ent tli(â liiglH'st s»ânsoncd food or the richer past**i*s or des.>erts, yet seem pârf»*ctly contented with their plain wholesome food. My children an? taught that the h(âavy rich foods, such as their ehlers eat ar(? not good for tlu'ir growing hoUies : that they will stunt the mind and hody, ruin their health and that father and mother understand what will make th**in enjoy a hapjiy, sturdy childhood and will cause them to grow' into strong, healthy men able to pass any test reqr.ircMl of them. This is taught to them in story or ])!irahh; form and iny hahies take the greatest interest in every les son. As for hping content with tlieir simpler meals. My hahies arc taught in cas(â one is naughty at taldti ht^ is retiuired to finish the meal Mt kitelu*n tiilile This punish ment is mild, hut it works wonders. I never mak«â ti child go without a meal as punishment; I never shut a child in a dark closet or send him to a dark cellar. I do not punish my children before strangers or be fore each other. What goes on between us at such times is a profound secret between the offender and me. I n*ver punish hy tryingto frighten my children into obedience and I never ])romiso them a punishment that isnât reasonable.âforthcom ing. That is the whole secret of my training. I would like to hear a reply from some one R. F. Whit.mirk. Calvert, N. C. Having failed in this the Oakland Chamber of Commerce comes back with the request that each of the.vo Oaklands in 27 states âshare in the fame enjoyed by the oldest, most prosper«yii8 and internationally re nowned Oakland,â by sending a small oak for transplanting in the park adorned bv a $2,0«!n,(j00 eity hall.
