DEAVER The Asheville Labor Advocate, a new publication in the interest of organized labor, which is published by J. F. Barrett, is loud in words of praise for Brevard as a result of the recent visit here by the editor when the local ’ carpenters union gave a banquet to the members of the i;nion and their friends. The Advocate says three big in- ilnstrial concerns will soon start enterprises in Brevard, but does not name them. It says that the banquet “was the scene of one of the most enthusiastic labor gather ings ever held in this section.” The principal address of the eve ning was delivered by Charles B. Deaver and the Advocate says it was a “masterful plea.” The new publication is filled with labor news, mostly of Asheville, Concerning Mr. Deaver’s speech it says: “Charles B. Deaver, of Brevard, former representative in the legis lature from Transylvania, dees hot carry a working card in any branch of organized labor. But he is a strong believer in the principles of unionism, and has made a close study of these principles, as was evidenced by his wonderfully clear si)eech made on that subject at the recent banquet given by the car penters’ union at Brevard. Mr. Deaver is one of the leading law yers of that county, and that ac counts for the fact that he is not a member of organized labor. His opening statement that all wealth is created by labor was followed by arguments which show'ed that Mr. Deaver has given much study to the relation of labor to capital, and he w^as insistent in his contention that labor should have its full share of the wealth which it creates, and the only way in which labor could hope to receive anything like a fair share of that wealth was through the organization of the laborers. “Mr. Deaver’s speech was thor oughly enjoyed by those hearing him and it was especially gratify ing to the members of the carpen ters’ union in Transylvania county, for the stand which Mr. Deaver took left no doubt as to his friend ship for the members of that organ ization.” ^Touring Cars Reduced $80.
