It has been estimated that a back yard 2.")X,")0 feel with a small investment in seed and fertilizer could be made to supply a fainilv of six with fre.sh vej;etables throughout the .season or yield produce worth, in cash value, from .'$.-)() to In the face of the high cost of living it ])ehooves every man with a family and back yard to convert it into a money value by cultivat ing a garden. In addition to ma terially reducing the cost of living it will give whole.soine exercise and result in better health and more contented minds. It appears to the News that there are great possibilities in this respect in and around Brevard, where there is always a good mar ket during the summer season. A few acres of ground under intense cultivation would work wonders. Farmers are confronted with great possibilities. Their crops were destroyed last year but the fields for the greater part on the river were covered with rich set tlings and the day has come for the two proverbial blades of grass where one used to grow. Coy Whitmno, who was seri ously hurt while workins; on a railroad trestle near Quebec, is im- provinfr slowly, being able now to walk about the house by means of cratches. Mrs. T. C. McCall, who has been seriously ill for some time, while improving a little, is still unable to use one arm in any way. The little pound and a half baby of Mr. and Mrs. John Miller died on Wednesday afternoon of last w’eek and was buried Friday morn ing at Rosman. On Thursday night of last week some parties—doubtless moon shiners—pried up the ties on a railroad trestle between Quebec and Reid’s siding and took from the trestle chords five tier of the sheet iron which is used by the railroad company as a covering for the chords. It is the general opin ion that those who filched this sheet-iron trestle chord protection intended to use it in the manufac ture of a moonshine distilling plant. The signs about Reid’s siding Saturday night seem to con firm this opinion. Exwize. DRV BOARD MEETING ThA special and regular meetinsr of the town council was void of any interesting developments on Monday night, when those holding receipts for taxes advertised as due were requested to present same. Very few tax receipts were pre- sented, the showing being much more favorable than complaints had indicated. CIVILIZATION VS. BARBARISM Editor, Brevard News: We have a national flag, al though some people don’t seem to know it to judge by their attitndo, and now’ is the very besf time to show that all true Americans are behind our president in whatever steps he thinks best to ui)hold the dignity of our country and protect the rights of our people on sea and land. It hardly seems possible that war with Germany can be averted, certainly not if (Jermany can bring it about, and we should all be ready to do our part and show our patriotism and loyalty to our country in these days, now and to come. I would like to see every one who has a flag (and get one if yon don’t have one) display it as long as relations with Germany are such as they are today. And be fore this is in print we may be at actual war with Germany. “As sume a virtue if you have it not.” Even if you don’t feel patriotic show that you are in touch with the rest of thecon?»try, andthereb- show the i)resident that you ar^ backing him up even if some cow ards and pro-Germans in congress are trying to hamper him. Goethe wrote: “The Prussians are savages; civilization makes them ferocious.” Do yon stand for humanity and civilization, or ferocious barbarity? The lines are clean cut; put up your flag and show that you stand for civiliza tion. P. Noble Simons. I The 0 Feed DID QUEBEC MOONSHINERS RGB HARRY PATTON IS NEW RAILROAD OF SHEET-IRON?
