Starrette, who has been in the mechanical department of the News shop for about two years, is devoting most of his time of late to his garden and also to those of others. Mayor C. M. Cooke returned on last Thursday from a visit to his home at liouisburg and to hi^ Anther, Judge C. M. Cooke, in a liiclunorni sanitarium. Liavor C. B. Deaver Entertains. Chas. B. Deaver entertained the Men’s Bible class of the Brevard Baptist church at his home on Mon day night, when 12 members of the class of which he is teacher and three visitors were present. The evening was so highly enjoyed and the program proved so interesting that it was decided to make the social gatherings, of w'hich this was the first, a permanent affair. The next meeting will be held with W. H. Duckworth. After the meet ing had been opened with prayer by Rev. A. W. McDaniel, O. L. Jones read a paper on “Our Helation to the Sunday Schools in the Conn ty,” which was discussed by Mr. McDaniel and W. H. Duckworth. Rev. C. C. Duckworth read a pai^er on “Our Community in Social Up lift,” and discussions followed by P. S. King and O. L. Jones. It was decided to make permanent records of the proceedings and papers read at the meetings. A committee was named to select a class pin. The following were named as a mem bership committee : C. K. Osborne, (). L. Jones, W. E. Uall, W. S. Price, jr., and W. H. Duckworth. A. E. Hampton, W. E. Hall, J. A. Johnson, P. S. King, W. S. Price, jr., and C. K. Osborne have been requested to read papers at the next meeting. The Men’s Bible class has been quite active of late. La^t week it sent Mr. Deaver to the big laymen’s conventiou iu Atlanta. The class has also de cided to erect a fountain in front of the cliurch. The class is growing and has as its goal 100 members bj’ the end of the year. How Norwa'lk Got Ita Name. The city of Norwalk, Conn., is said to have been so named because, when purchased from the Indians, the north ern boundary of the land was to ex tend northward from the sea one day's walk, according to the Indian marking of the dlstanca.
