There is nothing truer than
a jairij tale. It is the quin-
iessence of what Aristotle calls
the probable impoi^sibility.
The hid of the fairy tales are
folklore, (jiving the boiled-
down wisdom of centuries of
experience, and the truths they
teach are the old, old facts of
human nature put into visible
form for childish minds to
gra.sp. These tales do not
icach morals by precept, hut
truths by example, says Col
lier’s. JSo aniount of teach
ing about the hroiherhood of
mati,, and Christmas kindness,
and {liii rrii'Lirds of virtue, can

dren fairy tales and you teach
them the wisdom of the ages.

Origin of Word Christmas.
The vord Christmas Is of compara
tively late origin. The word was flr*t
used in 1038, its form then being
Christes-Maesse, the mass of Chi*ist.
Origen, an early father of the church,
said that in the Scriptures it was the
sinners alone, not the saints, who cel-
brated their birthdaj's. Another early
writer referred to the fact tliat the
birthdays of the pagan gods were kept
I»y the i)cople. The very first evidence
of a feast having been held in honor
or the birth of Chri.st was in Ejrypt
ubout the year 200. Clement of Alex
andria said, “Certain Egyptian theolo
gians over-curiously assign not the
year alone, but the day of Christ’s
birth, placing it on May 25.” Another
date assigned to the event was March
28.—Exchange.

Keeping Chrlstmaa.
Arc you willing to remember the
weakness and loneliness of people who
are growing old; to stop asking how
much your friends love you, and ask
yourself whether you love them
enough; to bear in mind the things
that other people have to bear on their
hearts; to try to understand the pt^o-
pie wlic live in the same house with
you? Then you con keep Christmas
