REMINISCENCES
Until I was up in the teens there
was but one public road up the French
Broad Valley. It was from Aslnville
by the way of Mills River, Javldson
River, Catheys Creek, Estatoe Ford
through Toxaway to the state line.
This was called the big road. It
was measured and^ posted. It was
measured by a wheel about the size
of a buggy wheel. A man would
■walk and push it. At the end of
each mile it would click and there
the man would drive down a stake
with the figures on it. Then the road
'Overseer would see that a post was
placed at each mile post with the fig
ures on it and the letters A. V. for
Asheville. The mile post nearv our
home was A. V. 35 m. which meant
35 miles to Asheville.
The next road that was built was
the Island Ford road. It crossed the
T'rench Broad at the Island Ford,
went over the Mill Hill, crossed Green
River to Caesar’s Head. This was
our market road to Greenville, S. C.
This road left the big road near John
Duckworth’s.
The law required sign boards at
caeh fork of the road pointing the
«lirection and the number of miles.
There wore two sign boards at this
foTk. One said Asheville, the other
C:\es:ir’.s Head. This was quite a
^■iitheTlnjr i)lace, for we youngsters
would meet at the sign boards, read
ing to those who could not
read and give information in gen
eral. As my father was road over-
poi r, 1 was well posted and could in
terpret the whole board. We had our
ortlf'rs that no rocks wete to be
thrown at, or hardly in the direction
of, lliese sign boards.
It was sai;l that the first wagon
that ever came up the big road was
a Virginia tobacco w’agon, (one of
those long crooked beds with a white
4‘over) and that there was a company
mustering in the old sagegrass field
rear the road. They saw it while it
was at some distance so they stopped
their performance and stood in line
with gun in hand. It kept coming
and the closer it got the more dan-
gcrovis it looked. The Captain com
manded them to obsquander into
*'seg”. They all lay down in the sage
grass. It kept coming and when it
5jot pretty close it began jumping
up and down and shaking itself, (a
rocky place in the road.) The Cap
tain jumped up and commanded un-
and bush b-g. They all took
to the woods. After it was entirely
ijoiH' a few' of the bravest ones came
baek to see what kind of a sign it
had left. The great mystery was
that it had four wheels and it only
made two tracks.
Old man Jimmy Galloway had the
honor of getting the first wagon into
Ciloucester. He had three sons: Har-
rii^on, Riley and Tom. Harrison and
Hiley were grow’n and Tom was about
13 or 16. The tw'o boys soon learned
to run the wafjon in safety but Tom
was too young to risk with the wagon.
But of all things in sight, Tom cov
oted most was the pleasure of driv
ing the wagon. They had just gath
ered a field of corn and there was
noising in the field but one fodder
stdck. After persistent persuading
of Tom and the two older brothers
t* help him, the old gentlemen gave
his consent for Tom to take the wagon
aAd go to the back of the field to
:«)me dry wood. This was the
happiest moment up to that time that
Tom had ever experienced.
He hit the-fodder stack with the
hub of the wagon and knocked out a
big chunck of bundles but Tom got
in with the wood. The old man, wish
ing to deal tenderly with the lad,
but being throughly convinced that
a boy of only 16 could not drive "a-
wagon, in his mildnes said, “Why
Tom, you had all the field to drive
in, nothing in it but one fodder stack
and you had to hit that. I reckon if
the cows had ben in the field you
would have run over them. Tom
what did you mean?”
Tom said, “I don’t know, but it
seemed like that the fodder stack
just kind of drawed me.”
The above is Tom’s own statement
of ^le case after he IjjBcame a grown
man.

The he&me of Nations
1. As a Safeguard.'
The important consideration which
seems to have been entirely overlook
ed is that the provisions establishing
The Leaijiie of Nations
are essential to defend this country.
They are not as represented an at
tempt to engage us in a self, sacrific
ing effort to help other nations but
are necessary to save us from' future
w^ar with Germany.
If the League is to succeed it must
be founded on mutual confidence in
the* honesty and loyalty of all mem
bers. A debate in the Senate, in
which the opponents of the Treaty,
at the head of the debate, attack our
recent allies, doubt their good faith,
and suggest possibilities in which they
may use the Treaty to our disadvan
tage, will do much to breed ill feel
ing between different nations and will
encourage those Americans, pro Irish
or pro German, who from sympathy
with the country from which they
trace their decent, rather than with
the country to which they owe their
allegiance, are anxious that the
Treaty be not ratified.
Trust in our Allies is needed, if
we would keep the fruits of victory.
Let the Treaty then be ratified and
the League be established as a safe
guard, not only for the safety of the
world, but for our own safety.
A Prayer for The World
O God, our Creator and Governor,
at whose word the earth came forth
from darkness into light; we beseech
Th«e to pour Thy spirit into the
hearts of all men, that they may cease
from violence and turn themselves
to creative work. Let Thy light shine
upon the councils of their hearts that
selfishness may be rebuked and that
ihose who sincerely desire the good
of mankind may be known and fol
lowed. Grant that all nations may
perform their several parts in mak
ing Thy Truth to be known and join
them in a strong covenant of Peace
and League of Nations which shall
prepare Thy way and hasten the com
ing of Thy Kingdom thro’ Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen. C. D. C.
FORMER RESIDENT OF THIS
COUNTY WRITES FROM TEXAS
Editor Brevard News:
Last spring I wrote a few lines for
your paper telling you of our early
gardens. Now' our fall gardens are
coming on nicely. We have roasting
ears in our garden that w'ere planted
after the middle of June. We don’t
often have as large cabbage here as
you do there but this summer we have
had the largest cabbage heads that
I have ever seen grow in Texas. Crops
in general are said to be the finest
that we have ever had. Corn crops
y. ere excellent. We have had so much
rain this year that everything is grow
ing nicely. Hay is the finest I have
ever seen. My husband put up a
large barn full and would have put
up more but he has been down about
four weeks with rheumatism* in his
right shoulder and his arm. He is
up now hoping to be ready to go to
work soon. There is always plenty
of work to* do in Texas for both men
and women. The corn has been dry
and ready to gather for about^three
weeks. Men are busy saving wheat
they have already made and the
women have been busy putting up
fruit and garden vegetables. We can
green beans and roasting ears and
every thing that is good to eat. I
put up far more fruit and other stuff
than it will ti ke to do us. Peaches,
apples^ plums, berries and so on were
real good this year. Well I will not
write much more for fear that I
will make my article too long. I
thoug^ perhaps some of my friends
v/ould like to hear from the Lone Star
State [again. Some relative or friend
has sAscribed for your paper for me.
When the time is up let me know and
I will have it renewed.
It was sad news to hear of my
nephew Beaufort Henderson’s losing
ijiis son, Boling. Really he has not lost
\^im, he is bereft of him during
th^^life blit it is sweet to know they
will n^^et again when life is ended
here. \ ,
