FRIDAY, S«ptenib«r 19, 1919 THE BREVARD NEWS, BREVARD, N. C. YOUR BEAITH DIPTHERIA Some days ago there appeared in a well-known periodical an advertise ment that ran something like this, “Total Ignorance.” Igrorance feeds the ranks of Bolshevists, I. W. W. A., criminals, loafers, and all the other cooties that infect human society,” but ignorance isn’t wholly conlijied to solid ivory heads, all ignorance doesn’t come out of Russia, ignorance isn’t always a crime—its just Lack of Knowledge, and ignorance is more general than we admit. In fact, ig- npranco is the “nigger in the bus iness woodpile today.” This is the way the business advertiser looks at ignorance. Ignorance, lack of know ledge, is the wrcnch so often thrown into the gear of Health work. Care lessness also has a place in retarding effective disease prevention. Some DcHnite Information In Regard To Diptheria The season for diphtheria is on, during: September and October we have usually far more diptheria than at any other season of the year. The Probable Cause The most probable cause for in crease in Diptheria at this particular season, is that schools open at this sea?on of the year, and therefore, the coM,urej;ation of lar<::o numbers of children. Diphtheria is a spit- borne disease, and of course children at p’ay, swap spit often. There is no doubt, but, that diphtheria carriers (viz—Those who are not sick and pro bably never have been sick with diph theria, carryin.'LT germs of diphtheria in their ’losc and throat,) first spread the disease. To Prevent And Cure Diphtheria Ail school children should have cul tures made from the secretions of the nose and throat on entering school. Thoi-o positive to diphtheria, should remain at home and be treated till the SL'cretions are negative to diph theria. Every child who has the least sore throat or cold should stay at homo till w'ell. Call your doctor early. If he pronounces the case diphtheria, insist that he give your child State Board of Health Diph theria Antitoxin. It costs only 25c for the syringe. The balance of ,'he cost is paid by your taxes. It would be well for citizens to “Take time by the forelock” and see if their druggist and physician has State Board of Health Diphtheria Antitoxin thir. is already paid for by taxes on hand in case thit it is needed at once. We have just received a letter from a party who paid his druggist $13.25 for antitoxin that would have cost only $1.00 if he had used State Board of Health Diphtheria Antitox in. There are three products that your druggist can furnish free to his patrons, smallpox vaccine, typhoid vaccine and diphtheria antitoxin. It does look like good business adver tising for your druggist to do this. Some people cannot see a dollar in the distance on account of the pen ny right before their eyes. Diphthyia is curable'if antitoxin is given in tin\p. All suspicious cases, those cases in Which there is no mem brane in sight, but have other symp toms present, should have antitoxin at once. Take no chances by delay. I would advise all school teachers to be on the alert for any symptoms of disease at all times and would like to state that I have recently quarantined some cases of scarlet fever. In view of the fact that the school were closed for so long a period last t;erm because of influenza physicians and teachers should co operate in reporting and isolating any suspicious case. W. J.
