TlHE TREATY IS DEAD The Treaty of Versailes, to which was appended the Covenant of the League of Nations, has jrone to the scrap heap, so far as the present re calcitrant Senate is concerned and may become an issue in the 1920 cam paign. The final vote followed the de feat of the Lodp:e reservations to the League and three unsuccessful at- temps to ratify during: the closing hours of the special session. After all reservations proposed had been de feated a resolution “free of all en- cumberances” met the fate of others. The Senators went home without do- 'inp: anyhinir w'ith the treaty at all and a state of war with Germany is slili In effect. After adjournment, majority lead er Lodfre, admitted that “the treaty is dead so far as this senate is con cerned, The President may with- j draw it when the Senate reconvenes,! and, of course, he can then re-submit ■ it in the next session, but the treaty | ifi dead in this senate and they killed 1 it, as I told them they would, if they voted against it.” Which reminds us of the story of tlic late Congressman Crawford used in flaying republican hypocrisy in the treatment of issues bearing upon un favorable business while that party happened to be in char.^e of the af fairs of the country. “If the times ment for both Church and State, first saving from degeneracy the most ex posed children in the world, and then training them for usefulness in both the Commonwealth and the Kingdom. Who of us in the joyous Thanks giving season can refuse to contribute the amount of one day's income, or the wages of a day to assist in taking the little feet of children of poverty and neglest from the high road of ruin and place them upon a path lead ing to other things—to high attain ment—perhaps to complete happiness and lives of usefulness? “Even so, it is not the will of your father which is in heaven that one of these little ones shall perish,” said the Master. If you have not already sent a contribution to one of the 20 orphanages in the State, “think on these things.” NEW RAILROAD MAP A pencil drawing of the proposed railroad, made by Dr. Hunt, showing the different routes and connections has been made atid hung in the Main St. window of the Walker-Davis Drug Co. This drawing gives a very com prehensive idea of the various routes suggested and those who are not fa- inilliar with the geographical terri tory through which it is proposed to build the road would do well to study this drawing and familiarize themsel ves with the situation. YOUNCy MAN LOSES THUMB SAWMILL ACCIDENT IN Harlan Jones, an employee of Hicks McCrary sawmill at Cedar Mountain suffered the loss of one of his thumbs Wednesday w'hen that member was caught in the circular saw. The re port states that a Mr. Simplon went to his rescue and was also badly in jured also. Both parties were brought to Brevard and Dr. Lyday, after am putating Jones thumb, dressed the wounds of Mr. Simpson. State of Ohio, City of Toledo, I^ucas County, ss. Frank J. The blame may be laid at the door of the minority, but it will not stick. The murderers are none other than Senator Lodge and men of his stripe. The President may withdra’v the treaty and present it again in the next session, and he may not. One tiling is certain: The republicans will not be permitted to render it mean ingless with so-called reservations to satisfy the whims of pea-nut politi cians. And Mr. Lodge knows that by this time. JUST FOR A DAY The North Carolina Orphan Asso ciation again calls upon every man, woman and child in the State to con tribute on or near Thanksgiving Day at least one day’s income to the or phanage of his or her choice. In order that more adequate equip ment and suport may be provided for the twenty child-caring institutions in the State the One-Day-For-The-Or- phans Movement W’as started some years ago calling upon the people to add to the stream of regular contri butions a special Thanksgiving offer ing equal to one day’s income. This is a reasonable request, for anyone can share with the orphans the earnings of one day out of three hundred and sixty-five. It is prac ticable, for rich and poor alike can participate in it. It enlists the peo ple of all creeds and classes in beau tiful co-operation for the support of n needy civic and Christian philan thropy. While it deposits a handsome aggregate in the* orphanage tfeasur- ies, it also deepens and enriches the life of all classes and conditions of our citizenship.
