RIGHT AND RIGHT PRICES • BREVARD TEA ROOM Open Every Day Sandwiches Hot Coffee Tea Chocolate TRANTHAM TBE FOURTH ESTA1I ^By J. D. Boone, Editor Waynesville Mountaineer-Courier.) Read before the Western North Carolina Press Association in ses sion in Asheville, March 19, 1920. The Fourth Estate, some people say Is a state of toil with little pay, A state of anxious thought and care, Binding its victims to a chair, While his body may often freeze, or steam While his neighbors prosper and of ten frown On this good booster of their town. He hatches schemes to bring them gold, While he’s half-dressed, unfed and cold. He waits for subscribers to pay their dues In order to purchase his family some shoes. Ke waits for someone to advertise. And while he’s waiting, often lies Of virtues and traits he gives to men Who ought to languish in the “pen.” He boasts and brags about the dead j I And sometimes then he drops his * head, j And prays for God to forgive his soul And keep him on the honor roll. | In all small towns in all this land j I Dwells one, whom folks misunder- j stand j Because he’s modest beyond degree, i This prototype of you and me. | One reason why he’s in this fix Is because of rotten politics. He often boosts and helps a gang When it often brings a hurting pang. He often helps elect a chap, Wlio for reward returns a slap. He keeps all others on the stage. While he is locked within a cage. Of course he has himself to blame For never reaching after fame. He doesn’t thing of self enough And doesn’t call his neighbor’s bluff. If he would but assert his rights, And shine along with other lights Methinks he soon would learn to smile And find his calling well worth while. He has an awful lot to sell. If he could learn his lesson well. His space is worth far more to me Than I can tell you with my pen; But he is slow to realize The ways to make men advertise. And when you do to charge enough For you must surely “treat ’em rough.” He shouldn’t print without his pay And should go dunning every day. And he should be as good as gold For all his creditors have*!sold. Then he should keep his name in print In every issue, without stint. If advertising brings success Then use it for yourself to bless. The secret of success, I think. For those who fool with printer’s ink, Is to work like whiz from week to week Instead of playing “hide and seek” Send out a handsome, newsy sheet So all will read it on the street Stay on the job each day and night And you'll be sure to fare all right.
