THE BREVARD NEWS. BREVARD, NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1922 AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL (W. J. WalUs) It is the good fortune of some per* >ns to be able to state briefly and yet fully, a basic fact. Dr. William Louis Poteat, president of Wake For est college, achieve^ this in the title of an address recently deliverd to the Boy Scout Executives on ‘‘Man kind is Forever in the Making in the Children.” What a marvel a child is with its potentialities for good or evil, for joy or sulfering. How important that tits path be properly directed, not alone in bodily health, but in moral well doing, for its nature is complex and interdependent; neither mind nor body can stand alone. The homes should and will be in the near future, governed along lines of physical and moral hygiene. They | should be primarily on every side and ! should be primarily clean and the sur roundings should be attractive. From the present upheavel on every side and the earnest endavor of men and wome nin every walk of life, the fin est results must be order and well being, evolve^ from aparent chaos. Homes will be light, airy and supplied with an abundance of pure, good wat er. This will go far toward prevent- ting disease. The co-operation of women who are now entering fields of endeavor from which they have until now been barred, is already notable in its effi ciency, and will continue to be more marked. The time is forever gone when the school will be a place in which the acquisition of the three “R*s” is the sole object. The welfare of the individual as a whole will be the goal. Subjects that have been in the past lightly treated, or ignored altogether, are now being viewed from their prop | er standpoint of value. This will be come more essential as the years go by. In former days the comfort of pupils was little thought of. The one object was to accomplish the task assigned. It was of little concern if the seat or desk fitted the occupant, whether the light was sufficient, or the water pure. It is beyond dispute that under such handicaps a wonderful race did develop. It is still true that “there is no royal road to learning,” or for that matter anything worth while, but op portunities being greater, things should be in order. ti. 0.
