A sample ad vertisement of one of these swind ing concerns is as follows: "Ladies wanting home work, any kind, spare time, write, in close stamp. Eller Company, V-296, Broadway, New Yo.k." Those who replied to such adver tisements were usually required to aay certain sums, from 50 cent.- to $3, for "directories," "outfits," 'or some similar equipment, before starting to work. Then the condi tions under which the work was to be done were found to be suc!i that few made further effort to enjraije in it. The swindlers made their .no>";y from the small sums sent for the "outfits," and from. orders for worth less jewelry and the like. Hundreds i>f women in need of eniMoyment made sacrifices to send these small amounts, only to suffer disappoint ment through losing their money and failing to secure the remune. ative work whicli they had been led to expect. It is hard to imagine a more con temptible or heartless swindling scheme than this, as it preys en tirely upon the poor and unfor tunate who can least afford to lose the money thus fraudulently se cured from them.
