COMMENDATION FOR BREVARD
B.ovtrtf is to be highly com
r. vini-ju in .its- initial attempt in
the observance of National Better
Homes Week, with the operation of
of i?s model home, which was ob
sct vvu hoi'e the past April, and re
garding which word has been re
cemiy received from headquarters
in Washington that the committee
on iwiirds has voted special men
tion to the Better Homes committee
in Brevard for the success of its
campaign.
This campaign was sponsored here
by :he Woman's Bureau under the
general chaumansttip of Mrs. Oliver
On. and it is no doubt gratifying
to .lie iadit-s in their first attempt
to launch this campaign in Brevard
to .now that their untiring efforts
have now received national recogni
tion. and furthermore that the
n;u, on-wide publicity thereby won
r:oi Kievard wii! be of untold bene
r.ts -.o this section.
More than three thousand com
mu lities throughout the United
Sat-.-s engaged in Better Homes
cam paigns this year, consequently
the ladies in charge of the local
cHin|>4i!?n have double reason to be
pro. id of the fact that, out of so
nisi iy communities observing the
week, national recognition has been
recorded Brevard.
:'t?iiowing is the letter from
Janes Ford, executive director, re

FASTER POSTAL SERVICE
FROM WEST TO CAROLINAS j
Abbeville, July i, ? Mail from the e
- West, coming through the Chicago f
and Cincinnati gateways, for South h
. Carolina and for points in North 1
Carolina as far e-f.st as Greensboro \
is now handled on the Southern Rail- !
way's "Carolina Special", resulting)
in an advance in time of delivery of
3 hoars and 15 minutes at Asheville, '
3 hours and 45 minutes at Salisbury, ^
5 hours and 40 minutes at Spartan
burg, and 6 hours at Columbia, with ^
proportionate advances at other ,
Points. A
The improvement results from the,
establishment of postal car service j
on the Southern's "'Ponce de Leon",
leaving Cincinnati at (5:45 PM, just'
ten minutes ahead of the "Carolina .
Ci
Special." This train receives all .
evening mail connections at Cincin- 1
r.ati. including Big Four train No. 16 ?j
which brings from Chicago all letter ^
mail Carolina f lints, Georgia and
Florida, arriving Chicago On morning
trains. including transcontinental
train-. This mail s worked enroute
and letters and daily papers for
Caroflna points are put off at Oak- !
dale, Tenn., where -they are picked '
up by the "Carolina Special."
Formerly this mail was handled
into Asheville on No. 12 and on its g(.
connections to points beyond. The w
average daily volume is approximate- fe
ly 400 packages of letters, with a
considerable number of newspapers
pouches.. Only first class mail which
includes letters and daily newspapers
is handled on this schedule.
DEADLY GREY PLANT
GROWS IN THE DARKl
Sanatorium, July 6. There is a
little, poisonous grey plant growing
in dark places without sunshine or
fresh air that is liable to kill one out
of every fourteen and infect one out
of every fifty persons in North Caro
lina. This little poisonous grey plant
is the tubercle bacillus.
The plant is different from most
plants. It thrives only in damp, dark
places, in animals and particularly in
the lungs of little boys and girls and
grown men and women. It is shaped
'..ke a lead pcncil and is so small that
through a hole made by a pin in a
shee of paper a thousand of these
little germs could pass side by "side
without touching each other or
touching the sides of the hole.
The little, grey plant cannot move
about without being carried any
more than a geranium can move
without being carried. On a particle
of dust many of these little, grey,
lead pencil shaped plants can ride as
safe and snug as if in a private care.
Another peculiar thing about it is
that while damp this little plant can't
get into the air unless in a very
strong blast of wind. Keep the plant
moist and it won't have an opportun- i
ity to get into the air and ride about I
on its private ear of dust. Moist
sweeping anil moist methods of dust
ing are best in your home. It keeps
the poisonous srrey plant from being
carried about.
These poisonous plants come only
from what is expectorated from the
lungs of someone who has tuber
culo8is. These little plants growing
in the lungs e;;ase tuberculosis. If
everybody who coughs, whether
they know they have th<52 litth grey
plants growing in their lungs or not,
would cover their mouths with a
gauze or napkin when they cough,
burn this gauze or napkin and burn^
what is coughed up the chief souroj
of the distribution of these little
poisonous grey plants would be del
stroyed. Exposed to light and sun-j
shine they cannot live. Let plenty!
of fresh air and sunshine into your|
louse.
