Th - *h ? l?: .its ..f M ... i 1 IlJDeekly Fashion Article BY LUCILE BUCHANAN Fashion Editor of Harper'* Uuzar New York, March 7i-r-0rigmality is the outstanding feature ?f this season's mode. Fashions have not undergone* any extraordinary changes, but the Paris openings,' just closed, have sho\yn us some new and sparkling ideas in clothes. Clothes are less standardized as to detail than they were last season. There is a more human, a more "dress makerish" quality about them. Jiy this I don't mean that they look as if they had been made by loving hands and the aid of the vil lage seamstress, but that they have a certain originality of detail and simplicity of cut that distinguishes the careful dressmaker-made cos* tunic from the shop costume. Some Costumes are Sleeveless The sleeveless frock has returned. " he simple sleeveless jumper has re appeared, too. This new mode had its 'beginning this winter on the Ki viera and at Palm Beach, where a coat of tan on the arm is worth two sleeves in a frock. There are three variations of the short-sleeved ensemble. One is the sleeveless frock or jumper-frock worn with, a sleeveless jacket. This is inevitablly a summer .costume, that will be more interesting later in the season. Another is the sleeve less jacket over a frock with sleeves. Several of the large Paris houses show this type for sports wear. A third, and most popular, and cer tainly less difficult to wear, is xhn sleeveless frock or jumper-costume worn under a jacket with sleeves. The jacket of the ensemble v. ves i the costume a formality ch - 1 ? * the costume out of the tennis-frock i:lass and makes it one that may be worn for "spectator sports," And when it is of suitable fabric, even for town wear. Many Variations are Possible This mode permits vhe use of ! many combinations of fabric and ifolors, combinations that have not been possible for several seasons. 1 Fancy woolens frequently form the jumper worn with a plain skirt that matches the coat. Jacket-like jump ers of yolveteen or corduroy are worn with woolen skirts. One Paris louse stripes its jumpers in color or .mbroidors them all over with floral icsiitns in multicolors and combines hese with short jackets and skirts if plain wool jersey, or crepclla air :repe. ? An example of the sleeveless cos :unie-complete is made by Lenief, ?vho shows a white, finely plaited georgette crepe skirt, a sleeveless Georgette crepe jumper embroider ed in white, and worn with these i white flat crepe cardigan jacket jordered with gold cloth. [.chief makes also colored jersey rloth or tricot sleeveless jumpers ?.o v worn with kashmere and novelty yodlen ikfrts. Not Always Sleeveless I Short jacket costumes are not al- < vnys sleeveless. Doucet makes car ligan jackets of wool cr:pe worn .vith pleated crepe skifts and match nj? scarfs. Short jacket suits with :ontrastin? skirts are rhown by sev eral of the Paris houses. Short jackets of navy blue wool ? and nav> due is extremely smart at the mo nent ? are worn with skirts o checked, or strincd fabrics in blu ind white or blue and gray. Oftei i jacket of this typo has martingal >r short belt across the back at th lip-line. Eton jackets and short bolero ire used on some of the new suit; rhese. of course, are mor ? extremt ind should be attempted only by th /oung and undoubtedly slender. A ?x? ni pie of the type of Eton siv Paris if. making is one shown b 3 -mard, a b;t extreme, but decid ?dly smart. The Eton jacket is o >lack wool fabric, the skirt is prre; ind the blouse worn with ;his com >ination is white. The costumes I have. described fin ill pure types, outstanding example 1 . of their kind. There arc other "hy brid costume*, combinations of suit and frock, frocks that look like suits, frocks with Mouse-like tops ac companied by short jackets, and frocks with bolero blouses attached to them. These mixed types are interesting because they show which way the fashion wind is blowing and decide definitely that we are no longer 1 obliged to preserve the long unbrok en line from shoulder to hem that Paris has given us these several seasons, whether we needed it or not. (Next week, Miss Buchanan will I discuss the interesting development of the new French hat for Spring.)
