PRAISED IN TIMES; FOLKS 'WORTH WHILE JN WNC ' ( Ashevijle rimes .Sunday, July 22) I A youth of 2.'i, who came to west ern North Carolina from Pennsyl vania a little over 25 years ago, to day ik I ransylvania county's largest ! taxpayer, as well as one of its most i useful and active citizens. He is Joseph S. Silversteen, presi^! dent of the I'o^away Tanning com- I pany, president of the Gloucester i Lumber company, president of the j Kosrnan ] aniiin^ Extract company, president of the Transylvania Tan ning company, vice president and chairman of the board of the Bre vard Country club, and president of the western North Carolina Timber and Lumber association. Mr. Silversteen was born in Tow anda, Pennsylvania, 4!) years ago. and came to Brevard in 1902. At that time Brevard had a population of 250, and Rosman, 10 miles from here and now known as "Silver stuen's town," did not exist. The total assessed- valuation of property in the county was then less than one million dollars. Silversteen organized 'if. Toxaway Tanning company, which is still in operation and is one of the big concerns of the county. In 1910 he had charge of the Hans Ree.s tannery in Asheville. Then in 1911 he purchased 20,000 acres of land from George W. Vandeib'lt. lying in Gloucester township, a:;d organized the Gloucester Lumber company. The Rosman Tanning Ex tract company was organized in" 101 3 and. three years later the Transyl vania Tanning company was formed and began business. Each of these concerns is a big one, and Mr. Silversteen personally directs them all. ' The assessed valuation in the county is vnow $12,000,00u, and much of this increase is on the hold ing of the various companies oper ated by Mr. Silversteen. Hundreds of men are on the payrolls of the com panies headed by him and every day in the year the Southern Railway company hauls many, carloads of the products out of the county, to the markets of the nation, bringing out side money into the county, j. In addition to his heavy business , duties, Mr. .Silversteen talies an ac I tive interest in all community work, being a member of the board of <li I rectors of the Brevard Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the j boys' work committee of the Brevard Kiwanis club. j Whll-d he lives in Brevard, where J one of his biggest' concerns is Iocat ; ed, and where he owns considerable (property, his greatest personal con cern is for the town of Rosman. It is "his" town, in that his many man ufacturing plants there caused the town to grow up where there had been only a farm and forest. Bos nian people are real folks, having erected many splendid homes in the town, with up-to-date business houses, churches and fine schools, and it is not a company-owned town, but is called "Silvcrsteen's . town" because of the fact that it was due to the industries which he establish ed there that the town came into ex istence. The Silversteen family lives in Brevard, in the town's most palatial home, standing in the center of a large estate. "Silvermont." Mrs. Silversteen is prominent in North Carolina society and is recognized as one of the most active club women in western Carolina. The Misses Sil versteen are popular members of th< younger society circles, in the re gion. WHAT DO YOU SAY? A minister of a certain dencmina fori was holding a meeting in one oi our towns. After the services ad journed, an accomplished lady cam< i" ward to greet and compliment th( visiting minister. "I am Mrs. said the lady. "I am happy to know you," said the minister, and I sup pose you nre a member of thi; church?" "Oh, no," replied th? lady, "I am a Presbyterian." "The Presbyterians are very fine people they do not mix up with politics noi ??' ljgi<UL very much," replied the min. ister. LITTLE RIVER NEWS Mrs. A. W. Sitton has been vers sick but is improving.
