| THE PRAYER CONNER
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT ,
Read 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4
' "Among all the names ,that reveal
God. this the God Of All Comfort,"
says a writer whom I greatly ad
mire, seems to -me one of the most
lovely and the most absolutely com
forting. The words All Comfort, ad
mit of no limitations and no deduc
tions." What is meant by the. Com-,
fort God gives? Is it a sort of pious
grace that may perhaps fit us for
Heaven, but that is somehow unfit to
bear the brunt of our every day life
with its trials and pains, or is it an
honest and genuine comfort as we
understand comfort, that enfolds life's
trials and pains iri an all embracing
peace? "With all my heart," says
'the writer to whom I referred, "I be
lieve it is the latter."
| Comfort, whether human or Divine,
s pure and simple comfort, and it is
i nothing else. We, none of us care
1 for pious phases, we want realities,
jand the reality of being comforted
and comfortable seems to me almost
more delightful than any other thing
in life. We all know what it is, or at ?
least many of us do.
When as little children we have
cuddled up into our mother's lap after
a fall or a misfortune and have felt 1
her dear arms around us and her ;
soft kisses on our hair, we have had :
comfort.
When after a painful illness, we \
have begun to recover and have been j
able to stretch our limbs and open .
'our eyes without pain, we have had'
comfort.
When some one whom we dearly
love has been ill almost unto death, !
and has been restored to us in health
again, we have had comfort.
Many times in our lives, probably, ;
have we said, with as sigh of relief,
as of toil over or burdens laid down, '
"Well, this is comfortable," and in
that word comfortable there has been
comprised more of rest and relief and
satisfaction and pleasure, than any ,
other word in the English language t
could possibly be made to express. |
We cannot fail therefore to under
stand the meaning of this name of
God, "the God of all Comfort."
But alas, we have failed to believe j
it. It has seemed to us too good to !
be true. The joy and delight of it, if ,
it were really a fact, have been more!
than our poor suspicious natures i
could take in. We may venture to j
hope sometimes that little scraps of
comfort may be vouchsafed to us, but ;
we have run away frightened at the j
thought of the All Comfort that is
ours in the Salvation of Jesus Christ-!
And yet what more could He have
said about it than He has said ? "As
one whom his mother comforted so
will I comfort you; and ye shall be
comforted." Notice the AS and SO in
this passage, "AS one whom his
mother comforted, SO will I comfort
von." It is real comforting that is
meant here, the sort of comforting
that the child feels when it is
"dandled on its mother's knees, and
borne on her sides," and yet how ,
many of us have really believed that
God's comforting is actually as tender
as a mother's comforting, or even
half or quarter so real. "Instead of
thinking of ourselves as being dandled
on His knees and hugged to His
heart as mothers hug, have we not
rather been inclined to look upon Him
as a stern, unbending Judge, holding
us at a distance and demanding our
respectful homage. Is it any wonder
that our religion, instead of making
us comfortable has made us thor
oughly uncomfortable? Who could
help being uncomfortable in the
presence of such a Judge?
But I rejoice to say that that stern
fudge is not there. He does not ex
, ist. The God who does exist is like a
mother, a God who says to us as
plai.nly as words can say it, AS one
whom his mother comforteth SO will
I comfort you. (to be continued)
A PRAYER
Father of all Mercies! God of all
Comfort! We would remember before
Thee the wants and sorrows of our
fellows. Unto thoSe, 0 God, who feel
the pain and darkness and mystery of
life, let the Sun of Righteousness
arise with healing in His Wings.
Remember in pity, the sick, the |
needy, the distressed of body or ,
of mind. Open the souls of all who
be in beds of weariness to the inflow I
of Thy Divine Life. In the silence
may they hear Thy Voice saying, "I '
have heard thy prayer; I have seen
thy tears, behold I will heal thee."
For the burden bearers, the temp
est tossed, the afflicted and not com
forted, I pray Thy consolations are
greater than all' the sorrows of the
world. Bind up the broken hearted,
and with Thy Touch heal those
wounds of the soul that bleed, and
will not cease. Give a spirit of en
durance and of trust to those whose
thorn in the flesh must remain. Save
them from despair and from the in
difference of a heart without faith,
and perfect Thy strength in their
weakness. Comfort all men every
where with Thy Light and guide
them by Thy Spirit, for Jesus Christ's
pake, Amen.
