MASTERS, THE LITERARY

On this day the people of Americf

SALARY REDUCTION NOT
Tin: PROPER SOLUTION.
Officials of the State Federation o
Labor in meeting at Greensboro Sun
day take issue with Governor Gard
ner's plan of salary reduction for al
.-state officials and state employes. Wi
relieve the Federation officials ar
ru'ht. There may be some instance;
wherein the state employe or officia
is receiving a salary out of propor
ion to the worth of the man or wo
aan, but we believe such instance:
*re rare. The point raised by Feder
ation officials is that of the state'
txair.pie. It is contended that privat
/mployers will follow suit, if th
stare makes salary reduction its wa;
?f reducing expenses.
It would be better by far if thi
?state would reduce its working force:
by several thousand, and require eacl
tniploye or official to do a full man':
work. Whatever waste there is in op
eration of the state's business lie)
much more in the multiplicity of em
ployes, than in the amount of salaries
paid. To lay off all those who ar?
oat really serving the state and sav<
the entire amount of these salariei
would effect a greater saving than f
reduction in salaries would- bring
?bout.
There are many bureau and com
mission members, drawing state sal
ary, who.se services could most eas
ily h?> dispensed with, to say nothing
of the army of clerics whose . services
are not really needed at alL A large
per centage of the state's payroll
could be chopped entirely off, thus ef
fecting a real saving.

1 stern and said: "We slap your wrist,
t thereby chastising and reprimanding

Adult* Contract Children '?
Diseases
Adults can, and do, contract many
. children's diseases. And, usually, they
1 suffer from them much more than
i children do. For instance, many adults
contract worms, an ailment usually

ABRAHAM
LINCOLN
-
BORN February 12, 1809. Fifty-one years later he was
elected President of the United States. On January 1,
1863, he issued his famous proclamation freeing all
slaves, including those in States then fighting for the
right to secede.
Slavery still exists in America today ? not the kind
of slavery common before the Civil War, but the slav
ery of the family wash, dirty dishes, cooking, house
cleaning. It is a form of human slavery for which there
is no excuse because there now exists an army of me
chanical slaves ? kilowatts of electrical energy ? ready
and willing to do the work in the home for an insig
nificant wage.
Let these tireless slaves do the hard, manual labor
in your home, just as they are doing in industry and in
almost every other line of human endeavor.
