| THE PRATER COMER THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN "Love the brotherhood." I would share with yon, my dear friends, some thoughts from my reading on "The Brotherhood of Man." ... 4*1 One of the absorbing _ duties of every civilized race must be to face the question of "Brotherhood," and to define what we mean by "our neigh bor" in the sense of the Lord's par able, Luke 10:20. "The Brotherhood of Man." It seems a common place, we are accus tomed to say, "We believe it." Yes, possibly in our studies, and when we write a book, if we ever do so. But open your front door and walk into the street. Look around. Do you love your neighbor as yourself? Walk through the town, your neighbor's problems, are they yours? Do we care? Let us acquaint ourselves with the various classes of our neighbors, poor and rich, land workers and brain workers, industrial and agricu - tural, educated^ and uneducated, pro fessedly godly and openly ungodly? Vre theirs ills and sorrows and needs |^i>urs too? And again ? and the ques tion I now ask is a fundamental one ? Do we make the "second Command ment of God" rest upon the first or not? Or do we make our duty to our neighbors the first commandment, and duty to God a possible second ? , if indeed it is a commandment at all? I do thank God that the fact that there are two Great Commandments is coming really to be believed today, < and more than that, I believe that the 5 Divine Order of the Two Command- i ments is being seriously brought . home to Christendom ? that is it is be coming clear tp the world that our duty to our fellows has no secure foundation except as we believe in the Living God who has made Him self known to us by Revelation through His Incarnate Son, and through the continued presence of the Holy Ghost. And against all such belief, against belief in the duty of any kind to ward? God and towards man, there rises up the great enemy ? or perhaps I ought to call it the Great Barrier Self. The devil has entered self, and has whispered "Behold this is thy God" ? Thyself, there is your enemy ?and within you. He has been so in the past. He will be so in the future. But we are wiser now than we were, surely. That is our hope, and it makes us turn to God and that is the beat augury for days to come. "Building the Brotherhood is build ing the Kingdom of God. This where life counts most. To be worthy of be ing built into the Brotherhood we must be unselfish. This is the test of our value. Not what a man is worth to himself but to others determines whether or not he i3 worth saving." There are two things at least we mu3t do if we are to build the Broth erhood of Men ? We must do unto others as we would that they should do unto us. This is a rule of fairness and justice derived from the natural law common to all mankind. We must love our neighbor as ourself. Thus means, that we must have the same love for our brother's soul that we have four our own salvation. I "Rise i74n 0 man of God. His Kingdom tarries long, Bring in the day ef Brotherhood And end the night of wrong. Lift high the Cross of Christ, Tread where His Feet have trod, As brothers of the Son of Man, Rise up 0 Men of God." PIGGLY WIGGLY STORES I Aa an out of town party, walking jinto a store about which we knew I very little ahead of time, we were I immediately struck by the cordial at Jmosphere of the place, the friendly in terest of the clerks, the very attract itive arrangement of all the merchan dise, and far from least of Piggly iWiggly good points, the cleanliness iof these stores was quite noticeable, jit occurred to us that here was sure ty a good place for country people to make their headquarters and to meet | their friends when they went to Ashe ville, because everybody does sort of like to get in a grocery store of the type of Piggly Wiggly Stores. We watched the clerks as they keep : the shelves stocked, kept the fancy ! ;fresh produce pilod up in neat dis-j plays as they courteously bagged a; jpeck of potatoes for some lady who j requested this little extra service of jtheni. We watched the cashier as he i quietly but correctly checked over 'each item that customers had gather led in their shopping baskets as they ?went around the store, made change 'for the customers and handed them back their articles in a neat shopping bag all ready to carry home. And we thought ? there is system, and now we know why this store has been so successful since they were originated. So, we then made more inquiry about Piggly Wiggly. We found that they j seem to have gotten a vision of just , what the people want and the way . they want it and are offering it to everybody who enters their door As for merchandise, we saw the best quality of nationally advertised package goods, just as fine fruits and vegetables as were ever displayed any where, the best cuts of meat and in fact if you don't want your mouth to water you better stay away from Piggly Wiggly. And finally, the best part of ill is that their prices are what you hope to find them. Every day there are many surprising "specials." And their whole line is priced very low because their buying power is tremendoiB and they can meet the prices of other stores and that's why Piggly Wiggly ranks as the leading food store of Asheville. ii .
