THE PRJtYER CORNER |i MY NEIGHBOR Read again: Luke 10:25-37 I repeat the opening words of last week's Prayer Corner: "One of the great truths declared The Incarnation of Jesus Christ is the Oneness of lumanity. He was not a man only; but THE MAN. In Him all humanity was centered, therefore every man has a holy relationship to Him, and con sequently all men have a relationship to one another. My Neighbor is my brother, and neighborliness is not con lined to nationality, nor yet to near association." Head St. Matthew 5:43-48 "The struggle in neighborliness comes when the sense of brotherhood is not reciprocal, when bitterness and wilful misunderstanding seek to par alyze inborn affection. ? It is easy to help those who are grateful. It is playing with happiness when heart touches heart and love is mutual. But to help an enemy, to help when help is scorned, to let the heart and hand go out in the darkness ? then we hea>' the call for ACTUAL heroism And yet is not such service most in accord with Christ's service, and therefor* rendered with finest loyalty to Him and to His Children? Christ died for our sins ? but no one of all the peo ple about Him ? not even His disciples -wanted Him to die, a sincere ref erendum would have voted "No." The glorv of the cross was slow in coming on lie earth, though heavenly choirs we:1 singing of human salvation. To giv. an enemy drink with honest de sin to help is to partake of the holy ful::<.'Ss of Divine Love. Road Romans 12:4-14 "The persistence of the mercy of the Good Samaritan is a large part of the t'^son from the parablq,. Ho not on' helped but he continued to help pr ietically, indefinately. We art apt to fail here. Spasmodic help, sym pathy which is chilled by lack of ap preciation. service which touches so many needs and masters none ? these result from the fickleness of human nature. Persistency is a rare vet "ecessary element in our neigh borliness. A single touch is ofter worse than nothing. One kind word and then negect, is fatal to sincerity The Patience of Cod is so marked, ir that He keeps on helping us while w< forget Him and fail to thank Him (?hrisfianitj which holds on Mondaj as well as on Sunday; faith which i; as i al in the home as in church; lovt which will not give up even in th< face of indifference or opposition? What- n-iblc mark- of loyalty an there. We are r.ot told of one won as spoken by the wounded man whether he spoke to his helper or wa: silent, or complaining, made no dif t'erenee in the message of the parable iGod's love did all the speaking." I Read 2 Samuel 24:18-24 I "As he journeyed" ? that is all \ye are told of the Good Samaritan, but we can read between the lines, and recognize the personal sacrifice. "I will not offer unto the Lord that whfth doth cost me nothing," cried David. Indeed, the joy of service is manifold, but its dearest value, often unthought of, is in the denial of self, or rather in the giving of self. Virtue has gone out of me, was the lowly declaration of Jesus Christ. What has our_Chris itianity cost us? Scorn, perhaps and misunderstanding, but yet more is 'demanded, even voluntary sacrifice, Porgetfulness of our own case: wear iness because we. have sought to carry the burdens of another; love so in j tense that it hurt; sympathy that galled for tears; a high spirit which from the need leaped to demand a general remedy for the need ? these ?give beauty to the service because isome of self has made the gift sac Ircd. What is the real value of our i'aith? Where does Christ find the goodness and strength of our belief n Him? Lord, what have I given up for Thee that others might be com forted?" A NEIGHBORLY PRAYER O God, Fountain of Love, pour Thy Love into our souls, that we may love those whom Thou lovest with the love Thou givest us and think and speak of them tenderly, meekly, lov ingly and dwelling in love, may dwell in Thee. Our Father we canont come into Thy presence, without bringing with us all our brothers and sisters. -Vre we not all Thy children, and hast Thou not a purpose of good for us Jail? Give us a large and noble out* ! I look. Give us more interest in each i other, more zeal for each other's hap ! niness, more willingness to share Jeach others pain. Take from us all 'i miserable aims that end in self. May > .ve, in the power of Christ's spirit; : help the weak and neglected, comfort the afflicted and sorrow laden, and . .iring a sense of fellowship to those who are friendly and lonely. I I Spirit Divine, Thou canst enable ? I me to understand the' speed of every ? heart by giving me a heart of my i own. Thou canst help me to trans i late the words of others with my own ? experience and to ask "How would 1 ' feel in their place?" Evermore imbue i me with this Divine Gift, a gift ; whose glory is its pain, whose crown 1 is its cross. Evermore grant me this ? mirror within ? the sympathy thai ? can take its impressions from all tht l|bnnlens that are passing by when JjThou shalt give me utterance, I shall 5 speak the language of love. Ant - this I ask for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen. ? C. D. C. S0T1CF.
