THE PRAY Ell CORNER TJ!E WOUSNESS of JESUS Ihe Gospels show clearly that tl Joyousness of Jesus overflowed in a the lamiliar ways that everywhei are the signs of a Radiant Natur When His enemies Say that He wj a gluttonous man and a winebibtx (Matt. 11:19) it is a gross slande but it is clear that such an accusf tion would not have gained currenc; unless, like His first disciples, He ha ^ taken His food with gladness. W None but a joyful soul loves chi. r (iron as Jesus did, and finds in thei artless and carefree company a sol ace and delight (Mark 10:16). Non but a joyful soul loves Nature a Jesus did, watching the changinj weather signals of an evening sky ii summer (Matt. 16:2,3) or consider ing the lilies, how they grow mor< oeautiful than Solomon in all hi: glory (Matt. 6:28,29). None but f joyful soul could have shed over Hi; teaching as serious teaching as then is in tiie races history, such a spun tan. ous piay of good humor as .i^sus iiii'j. He never josts as S enates . bu; lie often lets the r.pple oi ?i -py breeze play over the surfac* of His Mighty Deep. When He is teaching the disciples the necessity of patient and persist ent prayer, he describes the appear ance of God to the impatient man as that of a sulky neighbor in bed with hi.x children, who will not readily get up and open the door (Luke 11:5-8). When He wishes to picture the mean news of an unforgiving spirit He tells of a servant who had just been for given a debt of $12,000,000, but who went out and choked a fellow servant who owed him $17. (Matt. lS:23-35). When He wishes to reprove harsh judgment on the part of a man who forgets his own sins, He pictures a man with a beam in his own eye, painfully squinting to get a mote Only $69 COMPLETE with tuhn for the NEW ArWATER KeNT Golden V viced COMPACT USES the new Pentode tube. C. from the eye of his brother (Mat ^ 7:23). This reminds one of Confuciu ':e whimsical simile: "Let every ma e. sweep the snow from his own door: is and not trouble himself about th :r hoar frost on his neighbor's tiles." r, When Jesus deals with people wh i- are sick, sinful, wretched, His com /, mon exclamation is "Be of goo< d cheer." Even after he left the earth Paul dreaming of Him, hears Hin I- say, as though it were His charac r teristic utterance "Be of good cheer [- (Acts 23:11). There are times wher e Jesus is burdened, times even wher s He abstain!* from food, and gives j Himself to solitary prayer, but Hi n must, in all such cases, have followec - His own admonitions to His disciples e "When ye fast, be not as the hypo s crites, of sad countenance? but thou i when thou fastest, annoint thy head s and wash thy face; than thou be not j seen of men to fast" (Matt. G:10-18>. Jesus must have been the most 5 radiant man to be found in His day i in Palestine, lie must have carried ' with Him an atmosphere of good will, i Like springs of fresh water by the sea, even when the salt waves of sor ( row went over Him, lie must have . come up with inexhaustible kindli . ness and joy. What the Gospels re , port once, must have been His char acteristic effect on all who loved Him. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. .1 PRAYER FOR JOYOUSNESS 'O Infinite Source of Life and Health and Joy, the very thought of Thee is so wonderful that in this thought we would rest and be still. Thou ait Beauty and Grace and Truth and Power. Thou are the Light of every heart that sees Thee. The life of every soul that loves Thee; the strength of every mind that seeks Thee. From our narrow and bounded world we would pass in to Thy Greater World. From our petty and miserable selves we would i escape to Thee, to find in Thee the power and the freedom and the joy . uf a larger life. It is our Joy that we can never go [b.yond Thy reach, that even were we 'to take the wings of the morning, and fly to the ' uttermost parts of the earth, or were we to make our bed in hell, there should we find signs of Thy Presence and Thy Power. 1 ; Wherever we may <go Thou are with | us, for Thou art in us as well as without us. I We recognize Thee in all the deep er experiences of the soul. When the ? conscience utters its warning voice, : when the heart is tender and we for give those who have wronged us in ] word or deed, when we feel our ! selves upborne above time and place i and know ourselves. Citizens of Thy , j Everlasting Kingdom we realize, 0 j Lord, that these things, while they [are in us, are not of us. They are, Thine, the work of Thy Spirit brodo ! ing upon our souls. And we are I glad anjl joyous, for whom have we I in heaven but Thee, and there are 1 none on earth that we desire beside Thee. ; Grant to us Lord, the royalty of \ inward happiness, and the joy which ! comes from living close to Thee. Daily renew in us the sense of joy, I and let the Eternal Spirit of the j Father dwell in our souls and bodies, | ; filling every corner of our hearts : with light and courage, so that bear 1 ing. about with us the infection of a good courage, we may be diffusers of life and joy, and may meet all ills'; ! and cross accidents with gallant anil | high headed happiness and joyous- j ! ness, giving Thee thanks always for all things.
