jf THE PRAYER CORNER } THE SECOND MILE Matthew 5:41 "Wliat this Principle of Jesus does, when applied to our> moral life is clear. It divides a man's or woman's conduct into two parts, the compul sory and the voluntary, the things he must do, and the tkiags he chooses to do, the Fiist Mile and the second Mile. It says, moreover, that only as the voluntary overspreads and sat urates the necessary can life cease to be slavery and come to its full mean ing of dignity and value." '?There is an essential nobility that belongs only to the soul who can say w :li ,iesus, "No man taketh my life from me, I lay it down of myself." I ..tii u .ilinguess overflows obligation men fight as conscripts instead of f ol lo.ving the Fiag as Patriots. "Now with re^ '-r.es to this Spirit 0 iti Sc.->nd Miie. men and women are divided into well defined classes, of which the lowest are clearly those miserable folks, who, like Shylock are forever after their rights. Their ...? titude toward men and women is that ol" a collector seeking payment on protested bills. They are specialists in the exaction of what is due them. They interpret duty as a custom offi cer does ? to mean, not what they (iv. ? men or women, but what men or r.<> en owe them. m il !iu>n and woiiier -reveal them st by their instinctive attitude to iv. .| cleanly slated moral obligations k. as "Thou shalt not bear false w . against thy neighbor." Fac ing this command, some will cry, de all their rights. Is my neigh 1 then, bearing false witness against me? And some will search their skills, with the question of duty. Am ! rearing false witness against my neighbor? Rights or duties, you can interpret any commandment either way, and it is the relative emphasis, a man or woman places here that measures the first stage in their character build ing. N'ot till duty looms larger than rights is a man or. woman truly mor al. Hut neither the one nor the other is the test of Christian character. Christianity begins when the sense of Administrator's NOTICE Having qualified as administrator ?I' the estate of Mrs. W. A. Whit mire. deceased, late of Transylvania County. N. SMITH'S BARBER SHOP privilege in service becomes greater than both rights and duties. For us to be a Christian is to be more willing to serve a man or woman than they are to demand it ? to go the Second Mile; to forgive seventy times seven; to pray on our Calvarys for the men who put us there; to act, that is, as no one has the right to require of us and to feel about it all that our meat and drink are to od the will of Him that sent us. The essential word of Christianity is LOVE, and that means superabundant willingness to help. A man or woman becomes really Christian when the sense of joy in ministry overflows both rights and .duties and submerges them. And here is the Real Worth of Hie Moral Life? To long as . words worth sings, "Duty, stern daughter of the voice of God," he is but on the threshold of the matter. It is only when he rises in his climax to say: "Yet thou dost wear The God heads most benignant grace N'or know we anything so fair A.; the smile upon thy face; Flowers laugh before, thee on then beds And fragrance in thy footing treads' ? only then has he come to the hear' of it. Duty is never worthily done unti it is performed by a man or womai . hat loves it. So that they woult gladly do more if they could. Sonx men and women say of theiv duties " must." Some say "I ought." Som< say: "I want to, let me at it." Thes: are the three tones of life. One mat or woman is the slave of their neces Jties; others the grim moralists do ing their duty; others of an abound ing sense of privilege in life who fee ;>ll blessings large with God's favor all trials meaningful with purpose all duty as a glourious prerogative Though the gross output of moral liv ing may seem in each case to be th< mine, those lives afe not of one spir itual family. A duty done grudgingly aiul-the same, duty done willingly an after all not the same. All sense o! compulsion and of obligation is onb underground foundation for the rea . temple whose altar song is forever "I delight in the law of the Lord." A PRAYER We come to Thee, 0 God, wit! words of thanksgiving on our lips We thank Thee for Thy gifts. Thej are as varied as our needs, as mani fold as our desires. Our hearts en for Love, and Thou hast given us th< Love of parent and of friend, tha have been as Thy Benediction on oui ' lives. Our minds crave light am 1 knowledge, and Thy spirit has kindl ? ed a lamp within us. We long for tin vision of beauty, and Thou hast re vealed Thyself gloriously in the opei page of nature. May we take these gifts, not foi their own sake only, but as steps witl ; which to mount upward to Thee ? who are the perfection of Love ant Truth and Beauty. Bathe us in Thj recreating life that we may cast ofl all meanness, all despair, all sin anc shame, and enter into the secret ol Thy Eternal Gladness. Help us tc turn our earthly blessings to end! divine. Grant us brave hearts and true Inspire us with firmness to carry oul every holy purpose. Forbid that we should waste the time that is left ir vain regrets for the past, or vague dreams of the future, but let us be ur and doing, knowing that though wc fall, Thou wilt not cast us away. May we gather up the fragments of time and opportunity which re main that nothing be lost. Grant that we may see Thee, not only in the thunder and tempest and earthquake, not only in the great moments of spir itual exaltation, but also in the com monplace duties, in the familiar re lationships of life. May our home life be glorified with the spirit of love and mutual helpfulness. Remove from our midst all wrath and clam our, and evil speaking, ^nd bitterness, and estrangement, and make us gen tle and easily entreated, the children of a Forgiving God. May we know, with a spiritual knowledge, that Thou are Love and that dwelling in Love we dwell in Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ? C. D. C. Wake up, Glade Creek, if you don't get busy we will get behind. Come on and let's keep the news a-rolling. . Let's have a SHOWDOWN i TIRE ISONS on this matter of COMPAR With all the conflict ing claims published about tires, it is obvious that mis leading statements are being made. The only conclusion that you as a tire buyer can draw is that either we, as Firestone Dealers, are mis representingFirestoneprod ucts, or that a certain mail order house is not telling the truth about theirs. Both can't be right? one or the other is misleading the public by their comparisons. Firestone, in their advertising, only make comparisons that can be easily verified by -the customer before buying tires. To attempt to substantiate the comparisons made by this mail order house, it would be necessary to go into a laboratory and employ experts. The very reason that the comparisons made in Firestone advertising enable you to get the facts yourself, makes it unnccccsary for Mr. Fire stone to make affidavit on the truth of his statements or to file any complaint v?itli the Federal Trarlr Commis sion, and then advertise it, in an attempt to lea:! liie public to believe his state ments were true. Mr. Firestone doesn't ask you to accept compari sons about Firestone Tires and special brand mail order tirr-s until you see the facts yourself. Neither do we. All we ask is that you make your own comparison.
