Mr. and Mrs. Preston Taylor left Sunday for Mt. Holly where they will visit for a few days, later they will go to Baltimore where Mr. Taylor will epter school. Miss Eliza Henry who has been , teaching in Gastonia, spent the week end with her parents. Mrs. Theodore Loftis and children returned from a two weeks' visit as guests of Mrs. Courtney Wilson of Abbeville, S. C. Mr. "Speedy" and Ed Jones of Charlotte were week-end visitors in Brevard. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. English of Dav idson River spent Tuesday in Spruce Pine to attend the funeral of Mr. English's sister. Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Whitmire spent Wednesday of last week in Spartan burg, S. C. li Society News and Club Activities ] ilk . ' ? /v ' -J MRS. ALEXANDER H0S1ESS TO WEDNESDAY CLUB Brevard Wednesday Club held its regular meeting September 16th at the home of Mrs. R. L. Alexander. Regular routine of business was transacted, after which Mrs. J. M. Allison gave a most interesting and instructive program, her subject be ing "Public Health and Health Work I in North Carolina," in which she pointed out North Carolina as hav ing 'the first County Health Depart ment in the United States, its work having been started in June 1911. Quoting from recent statistics, Mrs. Allison also showed North Car olina as being the best sanitated' state in the union at present. Many I other interesting facts were brought' out. Next meeting of the Ciub will boj at the home of Mrs. J. M. Allison on I Sept. 30th, with Mrs. R. L. Alexan-j der as program leader AUXILIARY TO RESUME WORK The president of the Brevard-Dav idson River Woman's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church wishes to an nounce that after two months vaca tion during August and September, she will resume her duties on Thurs 3ay, October first, at the regular monthly meeting, First Thursday at three-thirty. The occasion will be signalized, it is hoped, by the appearance of Eliza beth Noble Simons, (the wife of Rev. Charles Rees Jenkins, who was the roommate of Rev. V. A. Crawford at Columbia Theological seminary) with her two small sons, C. Rees Jr. aged five and Arthur gimons, aged three. The two children dressed in Japanese ilothes and speaking Japanese with their mother, in an informal presen tation (impromptu) of a sketch call ed "Mrs. Jenkins Japanese Kinder garten." Eight other children of kindergarten age, three to six, all Presbyterians, will be trained by the president, Mrs. Simons, in the sing ing of the old-fashioned hymn of "Jesus Loves Me, This I know," and assist Mrs. Jenkins with her class. All the children of Missionaries sing this hymn when at bome. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins and children are taking their Sabbatical year and reside in Tokushima, Japan. HALE -WILSON R. H. RAMSE^ HOST TO BLANCH'S BARRUS CIRCLE The Blanche Barrus Circle of the Brevard Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. Ralph Ramsey Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Ten mem bers of the circle were present with two guests, Rev. Paul Hartsell and Mrs. Dan Merrill. Mrs. Roy Long, chairman of the circle, read the scripture lesson and led the devotionp.ls. Mrs..Harold Nor wood gave an interesting reading on "Pioneering for Jesus." Delightful refreshments were serv ed by the hostess at the conclusion of ; the program. Next meeting of the ; circle will be held in the home of Mrs. j Paul Hartsell. WHITMIRE-BARNES News of the wedding of Miss Madge Nathalie Whitmire to Mr. James Doyle Barnes on Wednesday September 9 in Greenville, S. C., came as a distinct surprise tc their friends and relatives in Brevard and Biltmore. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carr Whitmire of Biltmore, who resided for a number of years in Brevard. Mrs. Barnes is a gradu ate of Biltmore Junior College. The groom is from Royston, Ga., and is a graduate of Mercer college. At present he is holding a position at West Asheville. The young couple will reside in Asheville.
