BALSAM GROVE NEWS "theTland OF FRIENDLY BOYS AND GIRLS" Editor Charles McCall Associate Ed... Walter Greene This Business of Being An Editor Two students of Balsam Grove School have learned well the meaning of the word "editor.'" Being a town editor ma; be easier than being a country ecti.or. We have been getting out our little newspaper for several weeks in con nection with our English work in school. To make it better, we have decided to offer it to The Brevard News for publication and to the oth ?r schools for their criticism. Of course we have not said much w this issue about our school, but we'll tell you about it in the issues to follow. Our reporters in the several grades have handed in so many per- 1 sonal items that our space was taken up with that. But we believe our : folks will be glad to see their names I in our paper ? so probably we'll i please them better by our personal : news than we would have by school . news. Anyway, it's hard being an editor, , but we like it. ? Many Cattle Driven From Our Section Mr. John Wilson, from the lower end of the county, drove a herd of nice cattle from our section this week. The animals have been ranging on the government land since last spring. He helped some of our folks by buying some cattle from them. We would be glad to sgjl some more. Of course we do not "know much about the price of beef out in the world, so we usually sell at the price we are offered. One thing we do know, however, and that is ? the markiit man and the cafe man get much more for their beef than we get for ours. But let that be as it may? we're not kicking, and neither are our cows. Large Crop Being Gathered Our people have been busy for some time, taking care of their large yields from the farms. Much of the necessities of life have been produce ed and almost everything is being put in safe Jteeping foi; the future. Vour writer was down at Uncle Jimmie McCall's one night last week and heard him say that he was get ting tired working with apples, and , that he had put up 400 bushels of I nice apples. Uncle Jimmie has a fine . orchard. The 400 bushels does not I represent the whole apple trop. We \ saw a truck from South Carolina haul away several loads. It was not 1 a common South Carolina truck, but a big looking trqck. One thing is lacking on our farms f and that is cabbage. Thert is Scarce' ' ly any cabbage that we've seen. So i we'll resort to deer, bear, wild turk eys, etc., for our soups this winter, and try not to envy the fellow who has those nice looking cabbage we saw elsewhere the other day. Personal Happenings Mr. and Mrs. Wilkie McCall spent ? last week-end with Mr. and Mrs. j Lonnie McCall, of South Carolina. 1 An enjoyable Hallowe'en party was given at the home of Mr. and ?
