F. 1 of Rosman School held their regular meeting on Friday, December 4, with , the following interesting program be ing given: Devotionals, Otis Owen; "The Fu ture Farmers' Manual Program,1' Charles Morgan, president. A debate was held on the timely subject of: : "Hfesolved: That the Young Tar Heel Farmers' Organization is Worth More I Than Any Other Subject In Rosman High School." Affirmative debaters j were Charlie Lee, Blanton Whitmire and Ted Harbin, while Augustus Nor lis, Victor Sigmon and Doyle McCall, were negative speakers. Other parts of the program were: Riddle, by Charlie Galloway; Want Ads, by Ralph Chapman; Jokes, by { Ray Hinkle, and reports, by Prof, j ,J. F. Corbin, advisor. SOCIALS 'AND PERSONALS ) "Aunt" Martha Gillespie, who has been very ill at her home on East Fork, is improving rapidly. _ 1 Miss Bessie Glazener visited Mr. and Mt . Pick Whitmire, Sunday. Miss Mamie Hinkle was called to Salem, S. G., Monday on account of the serious illness of her mother. The Rev. C. J. Eldridge will fill his regular appointment at Cashiers Bap tist church next Sunday 13th. Charlie Fuget, of Cashiers, was a business visitor to Rosman Monday. 1 Miss Faye Glazener, who is attend ing school at the Ashevilel Normal, will arrive home next week to spend the Christmas holidays with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Glazener. The Rev. C. J. Eldridge and W. I. Recce wore Brevard visitors Tuesday. Miss Dollie Masters, of East Fork, spent Monday night in Brevard. - Thomas Masters, of East Forx, spent a few days last week in Pickens, S. C., with his daughter, Mrs. Claude Hudson.. Paxton, Sr, attended the Junior meeting held in Brevard Saturday night, Misses Helen Henderson, ,rf Quebec, and Geneva Paston, of Calvert, spent OLD BRIDGE GIVES f WAY TO PROGRESS! The old County bridge which has; stood over the river at D. L. Giazen- , er's store, for many years, has given i way *to the new and more modern ] structure, the State Highway bridge, j which spans the Frcnch Broad riv er at the site of the present Rosman jail. The old bridge has served the public since 1916, when the bridge occupying that place was taken out by tne flood. This bridge had been in use for many years. The present site was first used for a float bridge, there being no wagon bridge then, the river being forded by teams. Later, when the automo bile came, a wagon bridge displaced the foot bridge. The new steel bridge was built in 1928 and 29. Af ter that the old bridge received no more repairs. It was then condemn ed. Last week, when it was torn down, mvked the passing of an old land mark. The Quarterly Conference was held at the Methodist church Sunday at o p. m. _ , Miss Azilee Owen, of Brevard, spent last week visiting the Rev. and M?-s. C. J. Eldridge and family. Mrs. Elvin Ednoy returned to Enka Sunday where she will continue her work at the rayon plant. She has sncnt several days here as the guest <:f Mr.. and and Mrs. Marvin Edney. Mr Elvin Edney accompanied Mrs. Edney to Enka and later returned to Rosman where he is employed at present. , Ralph Gillespie, of the East f ork section, was a visitor to Brevard Monday. _ ? , Miss Elizabeth White, of Balsam Grove, spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. White. Mrs. Oscar Galloway, L. C. Hall and Blanche Owen, of Gloucester, vi sited the former's son, Avery Gallo way, Sunday at Franklin hospital where he underwent an operation for appendicitis last Wednesday. Ihe latter is doing nicely. Miss B'anche Owen and Mildred Price spent Monday night as the guest of Ruby, Helen and Mabel Owen. _ Mts. Fred Killpatrick is spending WELFARE WORKERS MAKE GOOD REPORT The welfare work is progressing along very nlc/ely in the upper part of the county. The following people j have been appointed as chairmen to solicit funds and to receive notice of needy cases in their respective com munities: A. P. Bell, store keeper of Rosman; Rev. J. E. Bert, investigating chair man; Mrs. C. J. Eldridge, soliciting "hairman ; Cherryfleld community ; Mr. Henry Gillespie; Calvert com munity, Mrs. Leander Gillespie and Mrs. Susie Jordan; East Fork, Cha rlie Cillespie; Quebec, Miss Helen Henderson; Gloucester, Mr. Charlie Lamance; Lake Toxaway, Mr. W. H. Arrowood and Mr. C. R. Clark. People in other communities r?ot renresented will be appointed later. All people are asked to cooperate with these chairmen in donating supplies and reporting needy circumstances. A room in the Rosman school building has been set aside to store the sup plies. The chairmen in the various communities will forward their in formation to J. F. Corbin, chairman, or direct to Mr. Kizer in Brevard. CHURCH SERVICES ARE CHANGED The following change has been made at Middle Fork Baptist church: Sunday school at 10:.'50 a. 111.; B. Y. P. U. at 7:00 p. m.; preaching ser vices every 1st and 3rd Sundays. The Rev. C. J. Eldridge is pastor and cordially invites the public to all services. POWELL-WHITMIRE 'Roman Powell and Ressic Whit mi re were married in Pickens, S. C., Satur day afternoon, December 5th, the Rev. J. E. Bert, of Rosman, offici ating. Mrs. Powell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Whitpiire, of East Fo.rk section. Mr. Powell is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wick Powell and is at present employed by the Toxa way Tanning Company. The young couple are at present making their home at Rosman. NEW ARRIVAL ? Collison and Murphy, of , Minnesota, will be chief speakers at the meeting. They are expected to tell how they assisted in changing i their section of the state of Minne sota from a pessimistic poor people to , an optimistic thriving part of the State. , Prof. J. F. Corbin is asking that all J who will go and take their cars and will be willing to take one or more passengers to get in touch with him at once. Others who do not have ( transportation are also expected to notify Prof. Corbin so that he may arrange transportation. It is urged ' that as many people as possible from ! the upper end of the county attend i' this meeting in Asheville next Mon- 1 day, and that the delegation leave Rosman in a body.
