BOX WOOD SHRUBS
HURT BY DISEASE
A new blight or leaf spot disease,
epidemic for the ftrst time in this
during the .past year, seems ta
be threatening valuable box woods in
bath nurseries and private yards.
'"We -have had an unusual number i
of imjntries abmit thfs trouble this |
season,' declares Dr. R. F. Poole, j
plant pathologist for the North Car
olina Experiment station. "The blight ,
seems to affect the boxes in all parts [
of the State. Very old plants have |
been completely destroyed and small
ones being propogated in nurseries |
have been wiped out. The disease is i
caused by a fungus which becomes ;
visible as small black bodies on the |
diseased leaves and stems. The symp- ;
t'oms of the trouble are so prominent ?
that it is not difficult to make a defi- 1
nite diagnosis. The infected leaves
develop a light, bronzed color. Tne
black bodies develop uniformly over
the diseased leaves largely on the |
under side. The infected leaves grad- ,
ually fall off leaving the branches
naked and they finally die. Any plant j
having the disease is left with * ,
ragged, ugly appearance if it does |
not die entirely." ?
Dr. Poole says the best method ol j
control is to Qtfilect the foliage with
Bodeaux^mixture and to practice sale
sanitary 'measures. Shake off all dead ,
leaves in winter and gather up ev
ery one for burning. Prune out the
dead twigs and destroy them in a like
manner. These measures should be
taken any time during the late fall j
and winter but must not be delayed
until spring.
The first application of Bordeaux j
mixture is given in the spring when ^
new leaves begin to form and spray
ing should be done at intervals
throughout the summer. It is neces
sary to keep a good coating of the
spray on the box woods because in
fection 'will occur at any time the
parts are not protected. Do not use
the high pressure spray as this may
damage the foliage, Dr. Poole ad
vises.

THE PRAYER CORNER
(From the files of long ago)
THE NEW
Revelations 21:5
We fancy a New Year, changed in
many things from the Old. We hope
it will be new, not only as a division
of time, but new in the happiness it
will bring us ? in the friendships we
cement, in the lives we live, in the
love we cherish, in the worship we
render, in the good we do.
If any of us would have the new in
all the year, fresh and beautiful and
satisfying, let him love in some meas
ure as Christ loved, and live in some
form as Christ lived and the word of
the Christ shall be in him a well of
water, surging up into , 'everlasting
life. God who renews and beautifies
the face of nature will crown with the
light of joy and heaven the soul that
loves him.
If we would cooperate with God, or
let God use ub in making all things
new in time and place we must bring
the Divine into the mind, and heart
and life. Failing in this we shall
doom ourselves to live in the old and
never be satisfied.
Let us nourish the mind on the
word of God. Men cannot live by
bread alone. Read, mark, learn, and
inwardly digest the Truth.
Let us refresh and strengthen the
heart by love the love of God and man
? "Love thinketh no evil". Love is the
fulfilling of the Law. Only in the ex
ercise of practical love, ever kind,
ever doing good, can we have all
thinks new, and be useful and happy.
Let us live a noble life, Godlike,
rising above all that is low, narrow,
j selfish, sensous, and purely earthly,
land reaching up into the light and
life of God, then shall we make true
character, and find all things new ?
changed as if by the power of God.
A PRAYER FOR. THE NEW
Our Heavenly Father, we thank
Thee for this New Year, upon which
we have entered. And we pray Thee,
that it may be new ? not only as a
djvision of time, but new in the hap
piness it brings us in the friendships,
we cement, in the lives we live, in
the love we cherish, in the worship
we render, in the good we do.
Help us to love in some measure
as Christ loved, and live in some
form as Christ lived, then shall the
word of Christ be in us a well of
water springing up into everlasting
life; we shall have the new in all the
year, fresh beautiful and satisfying.
And God who renews and beautifiies
the face of nature, shall crown our
souls with the light and joy of Heav
en. Enable us to bring the Divine ip
to our minds and hearts and lives,

love ? love of God and man, for only
in the exercise of practical love, ever

Give us grace to live noble lives,
