C; I BREVARD HI NEWS MR. BARRETT SPEAKS ? 3 As the. tedious procedure of mono- o tonous school days often harasses students, " complete diversity in s s chapel program is always welcome. ; For this reason, we greatly enjoyed ^ last Tuesday's program. Imagine our f sigh of immense relief, when we per- j. ceived that Mr, Barrett would be our speaker and entertainer. With :i v delicious sense of eager anticipation. . we calmly awaited the supreme mo ( ment wherein the program would , ' begin. Fortunate for us, Mr. Barrett has 1 th? dual personality that can dwell ; whole-heartedly on humorous things c and then reverse to the serious as ot'i. With equal enthusiasjn and >. skill, he ardently speaks of both, 1 despite the fact that a wide ?ulf liei ] '"?tween these two Complexities ol' life. | Of course, mere words cannot ' adequately express our sincere ap- 1 p-.fciation of his enjoyable, yet. valuable intercourse. It is needless 1 t> ] say that we desire more of this type of entertainment, for his reception | should assure Mr. Barrett that such ' is the case. BASKET BALL I As this is the time ot year in which sports fans center their interest upon ! basket ball, it is necessary that we i say a few words about the team. Al- ! though public interest is, for the < most part, focused around the boys' i team, thfi- prospects that the girls have in view for a successful season j warrant a few words of praise in i their behalf. Just watch those forwards! Like j a bullet the ball is passed to Ruth Pick, who snaps it to Floy Ponder, j With a simple twist of the wrist, she, in turn pops it into the basket. Such is their defensive playing. For the , offensive, well, it is equally as good, j Ruth Pick or Nettie Townsend can be | depended upon to wrest the ball from i the hands of the opponents, if it be possible to do so. The fact that guards rarely re ceive their just amount of credit ' prompts me to dwell at length upon the merits of these players. Just wat- 1 ch them stick to the forwards as though they were either glued or else leeches. What's that? A streak of i lightning? N<j, it's little "Red" . Johnson demonstrating that she j skows "her stuff''. Here's our old de- J | pendence ? ? Bess Ponder ? playing everywhere at once as usual. Of , [course, Mid Norton is ever graceful.,] nevertheless, she truly knows what a , good guard should do. ! Without a doubt, the whole team is j a hard fighting bunch that cannot be | easily discouraged or disheartened, j Armed with an invincible will power and a determination to win, they j play a clean, fair game that denotes seasonal success. ! | I CAPTAIN ELECTED J Friday, January the eighth, the j girls' basket ball team elected captain !for the season of 1932. The nominees | for this position were Floy Ponder, iThet Johnson, Jane Pearce and Frank King. Jane Pearce was elected. We hope that our captain may be able to | lead us to many successful victories. TUESDAY CHAPEL PROGRAM j Tuesday's chapel program was con- 1 ducted by Mr. Jones, who spoke on a j widely discussed topic of today ? "Occupations for Girls.'' As he ; divided this subject onto four main ; phases, the girls were greatly bene fitted by this discussion. The Branch es of this field that Prof. Jones discussed were: (1) Teaching, (2) | Nursing, (3) Commercial, (4) Exec-' utive Business. The suitability of^ each as a profession for women was interestingly indicated; likewise, the modes of determining one's own fittness for each occupation. Further talks of this nature are to be supervised by Mrs. Kimzey, who is well-informed upon such subjects. ETOWAH NEWS ,!
