BROOKS ; "Lem" Brooks, as he was familiarly I called, was a son of Rev. Washington and Martha Brooks, born at Newber ry, S. C,, Oct. 8th, 1845. He was edu ! eated at Furman University, Green ville, "S. C. and completed the course in law ? but never practiced saitf pro fession. j Ho enlisted in the Civil war service at the ago of 16 years. He joined the 16th S. C. Regiment under Captain Bolin and then later joined the Sec onJ S. C. Cavalry and thus faithfully sarved as a Confederate soldier until I.ee's Surrender at Appomatox. i In 1867 the family moved to Trans ylvafiia county. In 1872 Mr. Brooks married Miss Helia Erwin, daughter of Overton Erwin of Cherryfield and Brevard, N. C. To this happy union were born four children, Katie, Erwin Brooks, Lem Brooks, Jr., all of whom preced ed Mr. Brooks to the grave. I have known ana nersonallv been associated with Mr. Brooks for 50 years "A Half Century." Mr. Lem Brooks was elected and served 24 year*' as a County Commissioner, 22 . of these years he was elected and ser- j ved as chairman of said board of County commissioners. Mr. Brooks j was appointed a member of the Board of Confederate Pensioners for Trans ylvania county for six successive years and died as a member of said Board. In all these years of service, it is a common saying from the mouths of his fellow citizens that "Lem" Brooks was the most competent an<{ faithful county commissioner that Transyl , vania county ever had. I Mr. Brooks numbered his friends by the hundred. On these said Boards Mr. Brook's served with those of his fellow men as included in this list: Hon. George W. Wilson, Hon. T. L. Gash, Hon. James P. Deaver, Joseph A. Galloway, Washington Galloway, ; John M. Southern, Chas. L. Osborne, James M. Hamlin, James M. Thrash and T. H. Galloway and others. Of all the beautiful tributes that may describe the life of a man there is none more manful than a well sounded life ripe with old age, spent in service for the benefit and help of his neighbors and the good of his country. It is like a well developed apple on the top-most limb of the tree, having withstood the storms of life and just waiting to be gathered in. He can say like the Apostle Paul said from the Roman prison, "I have fought a good fight ? I have kept the ( faith ? Therefore there remaineth for me a crown of righteousness." So on the 6th day of April 1932, at his home | on the "Cherryfield Hill" in the 87th i year of his age. Mr. Brooks folded his mantle about him and the Great White Ship anchored at his port and Mr. Brooks went aboard and sailed for that undiscovered country from wh"se borne no traveler ever returns, The wife has lost an affectionate and loving husband ; The neighbors a kind and thoughtful friend: the stat? and obedient useful citizen; the church an upright and faithful mem ber. a christian gentleman. This funeral was conducted by th< Rev's. William Price and Paul Hart sell in the presence of a large crowc of friends and neighbors. The body was laid to rest in Moun Moriah Cemetery. Thus we commit ted his body to Mother Earth fron whence it came, and commended hi spirit to God who gave it. BY A FRIEND, T. H. GALLOWAY. alotak TRADE MARK REG.
