"Know Transylvania, Wooded Wonderland" is the title of an article which appears in the June issue of "Tours and Detours," a new publica tion issued by the Standard Oil Com pany of New Jerasy to popularize the .itate of North Carolina among vaca tionists and tourists. This feature appears on the front page of the little paper, aave^l hun dred thousand copies of which will be distributed within tho next f?w days. The story highly recommends to tour ists a visit to Brevard and Transyl vunia county. The article reads: KNOW TRANSYLVANIA ? Wooded Wonderland "Get thee up unto the tap of Pis gah," said the Lord unto Moses, "and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward and east ward, " Although the view of the Promised Land from Pisgah of Palestine may have been beautiful to Moses, we do not believe it could equal the view from the top of Mt. Pisgah in Pisgah National Forest (S-8b on your "Stan dard" map of the Carolinas). North Carolina's Pisgah rises C-749 foot or twice as high as the Pisgah of Moses. Besides, Moses did not have an automobile to carry him within 500 feet of the top, nor was there a delightful inn at 500 feet elevation to which ho could drive and see a won derful view without walking at all. The view from the top of our Pisgah is superb and unrestricted in all di rections. Brevard, gateway to this section of Pisgah National Forest, and county scat of Transylvania County, is lo cated in the fertile French Broad val ley which is flanked by towering peaks on both sides. Each paved high way leading to and from Brevard is one of scenic beauty. Speaking of beauty, you should make a point of seeing the waterfalls of Transylvania County. This county alone has ten beautiful falls, of which one is descriptively named Bridal Veil. Brevard. 2:100 feet in elevation, is -urrounded by camps for boys and girls who come here from many sec tions '-f the United States each sum mer. Why not look it over for your family's sake? And if you, too, enjoy -nnminir. you can get a permit from Uncle Sam to camp in the Pisgah Forest. LOCUSTS SWARMING j i mmmml Sftveatecsa-Yeap Visitors Hit! This Section Earlier TLaa Elsewhere. Since the appearance of l?-fe*r io cn*t? Jr> large breeds over various sscr.ions of Brevard many qncotioss, have "own asked concerning them. It in expected that the following article ?will cloar up a few argu meats heard among citizens o? the community. These peculiar insecta because of the warm winter have appeared early in the season and according to re ports weru noticed in Brevard and Transylvania county before being seen in othor parts. NortJj Carolina's best known brood of 17-ycsr locu-ts begin to emerge from the home;1 they have made in th" soil since 1915 and advertise their presence by an awful din in the for est trees of the State in late May or early June. Dr. Z. P. Metcalf, hear! of the de partment of entomology ai.u ?;.t.!cgy ' at Stato College, says the locusts j which will emerge this year are from | eggs that were laid in the limbs of I trees, back in 1915. The egg? hatched into tiny grubs about 1-10 of an inch long and these crawled into the soil througl small crevices where the grubs attached themselves to the roots. The small beaks were forced ; into the bark to suck sap from the living trees. Here these grubs hav 'been living and developing for about ? 17 years. Their wings arc now full grown and they are awaiting the com : ing of warm weather when they will emerge in countless thousands. "This is one of the most phenomen al happenings in the insect world," | says the entomologist. "It was obser ved by the earliest settlers in this State and careful records have been kept since that time. There are some kinds of cicadas or locusts which ap pear each year. Then there are the 13-year locusts as well as the 17-year brood. Sometimes these over-lap in emergence as they did in 1898. There are also several broods of the 17 year variety and all this has caused confusion but {Tin brood which em erges this spring is the best known and the one on which the most care j ful records have been kept." Dr. Metcalf requests that specimens of the locusts be sent to him this , spring with a record about where they were found and on what date, He says the locusts will do little harm ' cxeept possibly to young fruit trees nearby to a forest which is hee-'ily infested. At the recent auction sale of pure bred Guernsey cattle held at Morgan ton, Burke County, 34 animals were sold for $3,055. Burke growers sold three and bought 33 of thos offered. j ADMINISTRATRIX'S Notice j Having qualified as administratrix i of the Estate oi M. N.
