- .1 INTERMEDIATE CLASS ENJOYS DELIGHTFUL OUTDOOR PICNIC Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scruggs chaperoned a delightful picnic lunch j Sunday afternoon above Lake Sega for the Intermediate class. The class left directly after the Sunday School hour. Those enjoying the event were Misses Mildred Mcintosh, Bernice Eeid, Pauline Gillespie, Gwendolyn Grooms, Morose and Marjorie Tins ley, Nell Scruggs, Fay Pearson, Mary Holden and Blanche Scruggs. Guests present were Hix Scruggs and Cur tis Reid. B. P. W\ DELEGATES AT CONVENTION Mrs. Lodema Robertson and Mrs. Carl McCrary expect to leave Thurs day morning for Winston-Salem, N. C., where they will represent the local organization of the Business and Professional Women's club at the North Carolina Convention of that association. Mrs. Robertson is president of the local club and she will appear prominently in the sessions that will 1 continue through Saturday noon, in ' the Twin City. Mrs. Robertson will ' speak on "High Lights and Shadows". Other Western North Carolina speakers, willbe as follows: Miss Genevieve Rutherford of the Ashe ville club, "In the Land of the Sky;" Dr. Elizabeth Ramsey, "The Southern Business Woman Meets the Southern Professional Woman." The president of the National Federation of Business and Profes sional Women's clubs, Mrs. Geline MacDonald Bowman, will come from Richmond. Va? and be present for the whole convention's sessions at Winston-Salem. Mrs. E. L. McKee, of Sylva, will address the gathering at a public relations luncheon one . day. MRS. SOU LETT RETURNS \ FOR SUMMER Mrs. G. E. Noblett of Tarpon - Springs. Fla., arrived in Brevard ] Saturday to spend the summer months in Brevard with Mrs. R. S. Pcaice. having returned from a visit i:i New Jersey with her daughter. I. a recent interview with the News, Mrs. Noblett said that Bre vard was her favorite summer resort this being her second summer in the town. Previous summers she spent in va rious sections of Western North Carolina, Hendersonville, Asheville. Saluda and other points, however she said that she likes Brevard better than any of the other places. ! Mrs. Noblett will be joined by her husband during the latter part of the | month and they will spend th& 3UM-, mer here together CAMPING TRIP AT CH ERR Y FIELD About fifteen members of the younger set will leave Wednesday for Camp Cherryfitld where they will remain for an over-night camping crip. Swimming, dancing, and bridge, is the program outlined for enter cainihent. The party will be chaperon ad by Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Emmerson. D. A. R. ENJOY FLAG DAY PROGRAM The regular meeting of the D. A. R. at the home of Miss Annie Jean Gash on Monday was one of special interest. Mrs. Blythe conducted a program of "Flag Day," and present ed in a very interesting' manner a discussion on the subject. Routine business was transacted and a social hour was followed. The hostess served delightful refresh ments. j DISTRICT MEETING OF W. M. V. Announcement is made of the an nual district meeting of the Women's Missionary Union of the western district to be held in Asheville June 14. The session will open at 9:45 on the morning of June 14 in the First Baptist church. A program of interest has been ar ranged and several speakers of note expect to be present. Addresses will be made by Mrs. Carter Wright, of Rome, Georgia, Miss Emma Leach man. representative of the Home Mission Board of Atlanta, Mrs. J. W. Shepard of the Rio College in Brazil, and Mrs. Edna R. Harriss of Raleigh. Luncheon will be served at one. Several delegates from Transyl vania expect to tend, and it is urged that as many as possible be present. U. D. C. WILL MEET THIS SATURDAY On account of the Primary last Saturday the regular meeting of the U. D. C. was postponed until Satur day of this week. The members are urged to be present as it is the last meeting before the summer season is opened. Four o'clock is the appointed hour for the meeting at the Library . RECEIVES DEGREE AT FURMAN William "Billy" Middleton has re turned to Brevard for the summer after receiving from Furmen Univer sity a B. S. Degree in Mstheawsiics. Young Middleton is well known here and his many friends are happy to hear of the success be is making in school work. Middleton was very active in va rious phases of college work. He was an important member of the football squad, the Glee Club, and was active in the Math Club. After graduating from Brevard High School in 1928, he spent two years at Mars Hill College where He .nade a splendid record. THE KYLES VICTORS IN BRIDGE TOURNEY Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Kyle were vic tors in the contract bridge tourna ment staged Monday and Tuesday nights of this week at the Waitermire Grill under the sponsorship of the Business and Professional Women's Club. The successful couple won over John West Chapman and Ruffian Wilkins in a close match that was determined only when the last hand was played. The score stood at a 225 lead for the Kyles' when the final hand was dealt, and their skilful playing won for them the triumph. There were twenty entrants for play on the opening night of the con test, of this number twelve were eliminated. The remaining pairs played Tuesday evening for the fin als. Mrs. A. H. Kizer and Mrs. H. N. Carrier were runners-pp, remain ing in the game until the semi-finals. The arrangement for the tourna ment was under the direction of Mrs. Paul Smathers, Mrs. S. M. Macfie, Tommie Whitirire and Joe Vigodsky. The club has expressed their appre ciation to this committee who work ed so unceasingly toward the success ful contest. REGULAR MEETING OF THE EASTERN STAR The regular meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star was hold Tues day evening at the lodge rooms. Rou tine business was transacted and a social period followed the closing of the meeting. Light refreshments of i ice cream and cake were served. PRESBYTERIANS AT BANNER ELK Rev. R. L. Alexander, with Misses j Bertha Jean Hampton and Charlotte Patton, is spending this week at Bannei Elk, where there is in ses sion a Presbyterian Training School for young people. Mr. Alexander is a teacher in the Boys' Council, and conducts the Ves per Services for the Camp. This school is conducted every sum mer and is proving very helpful in the training of young people for church work. Rev. and Mrs. Perry and children I have gone to Myrtle Beach, S. C.J where they will stay for two weeks. ' bPEVARD LADIES AT DISTRICT MEET The following1 laaies reprseent?d the Brevard Wonsan's Missionary Society at their district meetiag in Ashev.lle on Tuesday of this week: Mesaames. A. E. Qillespie, L. B. Hayes, Cordis King, and J. B. Pick elsimer. The Sarah Tayior .Society was represented by Mrs, Goodc Lof tis. This meeting was of the Western District of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and was largely at tended. Several officers of the state or ganization were present; included in these were Mrs. C. C. Weaver, of Winston-Salem, president of the con ference organization end Mrs. George Hoyle, of Shelby, superintendent of children's work of the conference. MAKES SHORT VISIT EN ROUTE Garner Hammond and Frank Crit terton were guests at the home of Mrs. E. S. English this week. They were enroute to their home in Jack sonville, Florida, from New York and Washington where they have been for the past four years. Mr. Ham mond spent some time in Brevard about four years ago before going to Washington, and will be remem bered here by the numerous friends that he made. MRS. McGEHEE HERE FOR SUMMER Mrs. J. T. McGehee, with her son, James, has arrived in Brevard to open her summer home on Franklin Avenue. Misses Fannie and Nida Mc Gehee expect to join their mother s'-.ortly, and will be here for the iason. Capt. and Mrs. James L. Risk and ! family have arrived in Brevard to i spend the summer months at their home in Forest Hills. Miss Martine Pearce of New York is expected Sunday to spend a two weeks vacation with her mother, Mrs, R. S. Pearce. Jerry Jerome left Wednesday for Dorchester, Mass to visit his mother who was dangerously injured in an auto accident last Thursday. Miss Ethel Williams is now at the home of her parents after receiving a diploma for her work at the Ashe ville Normal. Miss Williams made an exceptionally good record during her stay at the Normal. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Kyle are spend ing Thursday in Asheville. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. West and chil dren are visiting in Hickory, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Saltz of St. Petersburg, Fla., are the guests of | Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Saltz. Brevard students returning from W. C. T. C. at Cullowhee included Misses Dixie Jones, Elizabath Duck worth, Lena Allison and Lessie Reid. j Miss Marie Case, having completed ' a year's study at the Asheville Nor mal, has returned to Brevard for the- , summer. ? LOVELY LUNCHEON AT. INSTITUTE A very attractive luncheon given by the Faculty of the Brevard In- ! stitute, was tendered the Seniors of that institution in their final gather ing before graduation. A special fea ture of this luncheon, which is an annual affair, was the presence of several alumni. The attractive decorations carried a Japanese effect with wisteria tastefully placed in the dining: room. The place carcb that were used were 3ent directly from China for this opecial occasion. . Japanese lan terns were hung along the luncheon table, around which wore seventy five guests. The program presented was as fol lows: Toast to School, Jack Wildey; B. I. Song, by all; Toast to Seniors, Miss Mary Floyd; Response, George Mangum ; Piano solo^ M;rs. Julian Johnson; Toast to Mr. Winton, Mis3 Elizabeth Larmon; Piano solo, Miss Julia Merritt; Toast to Alumni, Miss Frances Denton; Response, Miss Res sie Kate Meece; Vocal solo, Mrs. J. F. Winton. The luncheon ended with the singing of "Blest Be the Tie that Binds." Miss Elizabeth Spalding was toast mistress. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Silversteen are spending several days in New York. Hinton McLeold has returned from Columbia, S. C., where he attended the South Carolina University dur ing the past year. John Kimzey, manager of the Stan dard Service station, attended a Standard Oil Co. Sales meeting at the George Vanderbilt Hotel, Ashevilie, Tuesday evening. MEN'S BIBLE CLASS AT WHITE PINE The Men's Bible Class of the Bre vard Methodist Church met la3t Fri day evening at White Pine Camp for a fish fry.
