MARKED INCREASE I
SHOWN IN SCHOOLS |
Records Given By School Facts
Show Tremendous Growth |
In State.
Raleigh, June 22 ? School atten
dance on North Carolina has increas
ed from 51.7 per cent of the enroll
ment 31 years ago to 82.1 per cent of
nrollment now, during which inter
val the compulsory attendance law
was passed, the current issue of
State School Facts, published by
Supt. A. T. Allen, shows.
The school population increased
from 695,629 for the school year
1899-1900 to 1,045,230 for 1930-81,
(?he enrollment increased from 400,
452 to 842,706 and the average daily
attendance increased from 206,918 to
<591,995 in the 31 years.
Dr. Allen points out that many
duplications appear in earlier school
records which are eliminated by a
new system started in 1930-31, which
designates whether a child is being
registered for the first time, pre
viously was in a different grade or
room in the same school unit, in
another county or charter system
wrhin the State. This gives different
figures for enrollment for the school
room, the local school, the county or
"harter school and the State.
Forsyth county made the best
rural white school record for 1930
31, with a 95.4 per cent attendance,
while Clay, the lowest, had an atten
dance of 81.2 per cent. Alleghany had
the best colored attendance record
and Cherokee the poorcut, but neither
}f these counties has many negro pu
pils in them.
Transylvania county, taking 82nd
olace in white pupil attendance
among the 100 county rural systems,
'iad 2,375 white pupils enrolled in
"930-31, with an average daily mem
bership of 2,086, an average daily
?ttendance of 1,818, and 87.1 per cent
a attendance. The colored rural
schools of this county took 70th place
among the 100 county systems,
showing enrollment of 278, daily
membership of 218, daily attendance
if 177, or a 81.2 per cent attendance
'?ecord.

/.V MEMORIAL
In memory of our dear father, !
Reverend W. R. West, who passed '
away February 29, 1932.
I was called from town one morning
When the sky was bright and clear
Called to see my dear, sweet father,
For his time had come to go.
When I reached his silent bed side,
Then, to me, he could not speak.
God had called him home to heaven,
lie had sweetly gone to sleep.
I thank God he was a Christian,
Lived his life as best he knew.
And I know someday I'll meet him,
It to Jesus I'll be true.
He has gone from earth to glory,
Gone to live with Christ above,
Where no sorrow never can enter.
All is peace and joy and rest.
Composed by his daughter,
VERA JOE WEST.
