According to a report given out, by

larger extent than- 'ever' before the
services of that institution. ,
Over 1.800 registrations by teachers
und others were made in the Summer
School of which Dean Walker is di
rector, and 500 teachers were assisted

Journal now has a mailing list of 800

In the matter of extension teaching,

People at Lyman, Wash.
jDc-wey Howard, son of Mr. and
rs. X. II. Howard of Redding, Cal
ifornia, passed away Thursday, Feb.
7 at the homeof his sister, Mrs. Max
Kcll at Childs Spur. The deceased
vas born in 1899. He came to Wash
ington with his parents, when but a
hoy, and has lived here most of the
time since. Besides his parents, he
leaves to mourn his death, four sis
ters, Mrs. George McCarthy of Cali
torn'ia. Mrs. Spurgeon of Nooksack;
Mrs. Henry Stiles, and Mrs; Max Kell
f Lyman, and one brother, Charles
J toward of Lyman.
Funeral services were, conducted
iicre m the Baptist church with the
Rev. Virgil Ramey officiating. Spec
ial music by Kev. Cochran of Tacoma.
The floral offerings were many and
Sxcautiful. Interment was made in
the Lyman cemetery.
Mr: and Mrs.. Meldrutn Bates and
two sons made a short visit here on
Tuesday.
Mr. P. Howard came over from
Ikllingham'last Monday to attend the
Mineral - services of his nephew,
Dewey Howard.
The members of the Baptist Aids
v)f. Eirdview, Hamilton and Lyman
entertained in the Sunday school
rooms of the Baptist-church here last
Thursday afternoon in compliment to

Mr. Reid Cabe is still employed by
the P, H, Hanes. Knitting company
and is boarding at Mr. Harley Mal

Mr. Turner Breedlove's family had
planiud going heme soon but on ac
count of one of the children, having
mumps they will postpone their trip.
Mr. John Beasleyand family from
Virginia spent the week end here
with-Mr. Beasley's sister, Mrs. Fred
Jacobs.
'Mr. Harve'Swafford who works out
in t,ht country near here was in town
shopping a few days ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Wade McKay are
going to housekeeping on Sidney
street, south side.
. We are sorry'to report one of Mr.
Will Recce's girls being in the hos
pital. ' -.
There was a very destructive fire
on Centerville street . last week de
stroying' a big grocery and clothing
store, a market, a woodyard, and two
nice dwelling houses.
Miss Lassie Emory who is clerking
here plans leaving for Franklin in a
few days.
Misses Nellie and Pearl West are
employees of the F. W. Woolworth
stores here.
We are wondering what is the mat
ter with Iotla and other communities
that th'ey can't let us hear from them.

Burnett improving some.
Mr. and Mrs. Austin Byrd, of Stiles,
were, visiting Mrs. Byrcl'r, mother,
Mrs. Arvey, Saturday and Sunday.
Mr. Jim Shepherd and family, of
Cowee, were visiting relatives in this
section the past week.
Rev. Truitt. delivered an interesting
sermon at Riverview church Sunday,
and the people are expecting a re
vival meeting to begin Monday night.

Ir. David Peek returned last week

Mr. John Buchanan is buying a
farm in Alexander County..

Miss Mayme Moses, Mr. Horace
Peek, and Mr. Lyle Higdon, who are
attending school at Cullowhcc, spent
the 'eek-end with relatives in this
neighborhood. '

Mr. Lewis Moses made a business
trip to Dillsboro last Friday.
The Higdonville High Scliool closed
its 1923-1924 session last Fljday, .It is
rumored that the same -teachers are
to be with us again next year.
.Mr. J. T. Berry was hurt by a horse
which mashed hifn against a. wall
several days ago. We hope that no
permanent' injuries were received.,
. Mr. Jim Webb brought the body of
his youngest - daughter home from
GiiVtonia , ami she was buried at the
Kllijay Baptist Church one day last
