New York City now consumes daily more than a pint of fresh milk per capita. It has been estimated that it cost $7,250 for Christopher Columbus tq discover America. In the wilds of Costa Kiqa large beetles have been found giving light enough to light a room. Southern' mills are now taking twice as much cotton as the northern mills, although nowhere running at full capacity. Picnic days are here. Don't forget the State Farmers Convention at State College on July 23, 24 and 25. Make your plans now tp attend. Forty-seven farmers -sold over $200 worth of produce at thepurlington Curb Market in Alamance County at a recent sales day, reports the county agent. One farmer of Buncombe County is capitalizing the demand for blue grass sod. He has sold $175 worth from a small lot and resceds the1 land as fast as the sod is removed, reports the county agent. A tairiy sound American witn a fairly decent respect for the consti tution is better material for filling an Important public position than is the hide-bound follower of some particu lar brand, of partisanship. This is a good time to select the best small grain for seed this fall, Dr. R. Y. North Carolina has the largest hos iery, denim and towel mills in the world, has total of 6,000 factories em ploying 158,000 workers with annual payroll of $127,000,000, and has second largest hydro-electric power develop ment in the world, Tom Tarheel says that he is saving . that big patch of trees on the back of his place to be cropped as any other field on the olace. The weed trees are to be chopped out for firewood and the mature trees to be harvested as needed for timber. Properly fertilized peach trees have withstood early season, frost and freezes much better than unfertilized trees, finds County Agent Kope Elias of Mecklenburg County.' who. spent some time in helping his farmers to , spray their trees this spring. We have heard it remarked several times that' sun -'was off on a strike, but I think it has been back to its normal position for the past few days in this section. ' I think one of . the first things we should mention is our' church work, but usually this is the lt thing-we mention. It seems that our Sunday School and church work has been moving slowly for a while,, but for the last Sunday or so it seejns that a new ray of light has dawned on Watauga Sunday. School and singing class. We have in addition to our regular sing ing class Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carter and, Mr. John Patterson, all of whom seem to be almost masters of song. We feel gneatly reinforced in Sunday School work and singing with these in oar midst. Mr. Tom Carter made a short talk on Sunday School work last Sunday, which was of much interest. .We are glad to welcome Mr. Carter and fam ily into our community. They are strangers to us, but we think they w.in oe a great neip iu us m uui church work. We are also glad, to announce that Rev. Solesbce will "be in our midst in the next few days, as he1 expects to move to rranK uaney s- u lower Watauga at once. We are glad to have such Christian workers in our community. So many persons have been sick here that to report all the cases would make these items look like a hospital report, therefore we shall treat all alike and omit all cases this week. The trouble is due to influ enza. 1 On every : hand one hears expres siohs of regret for the passing of Dr Siler. He always came promptly when called unless he was busy with other cases or for some other reason could not respond. This is a quality which onr people appreciate- esoec- lally. He was continually at work to secure better schools, better . roads and a more general understanding of the principles of sanitation for our people. The Bible teaches us that the highest expression of religion is round in service to our fellow man This being true, it is praise of the highest kind to say as we can with all truth that Dr. Siler was a. rarely useful man to society.
