Sylva Couple Observed Their 50th Wedding Anniversary On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. John V. Ashe, of Sylva, observed their fiftieth wed- 1 ding anniversary at their home on Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 5:00 o'clock. Both are natives of Jack son county and have resided "%in Sylva for the past 35 year*. They are members of the Sylva Metho dist Church. Mrs. Ashe was before her mar riage, Miss Ellen E. Bumgarner, daughter of W. H. and Sarah Bum garner, who resided near Love's Chapel in this county. Mr. Ashe is the son of William Marion and Samantha Ashe, also of Jackson county. He was em ployed by the Tannery for 32 years until he retired a few years ago. "I feel young Inside, but I guess after being married 50 y?ars, I I should feel pretty old. Outside of a few cross words we have enjoyed our whole married life," said Mr. Ashe in speaking of his fifty years of. marriage. ..n "We are well and happy today and I believe that having always given the Lord a tenth of what I have made has had something to do with our being happy," he con tinued. Despite his 74 years, Mr. Ashe is able to work around the place and last spring when he could not get a man to plow his half-acre corn field, he tackled the job with a pick and a hoe and had the fin est crop of corn he ever raised. Mr. and Mrs. Ashe are parents of twelve children, seven of whom are living. They are: J. B. Ashe, of Rock Hill, S. C.; Mrs. L. B. Rhodes, of Raleigh; A. E. Ashe, of Durham; and W. M. Ashe, J. E. Ashe, and Mrs. W. G. Cunningham, of Asheville; and Mrs. W. H. Book Reviewed At UDC Meeting Thursday Night The monthly meeting of the B. H. Cathey chapter of U.D.C. was held last Thursday night at the home of Mrs. \V. L. Cullowhee Home Demonstration Club Has Meeting Members of tne Cullowhee Speedwell Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. H. P. Smith, Cullowhee, on Tuesday for their regular meeting with Mrs. Ed Bryson, of Speedwell, presid ing. Using the subject "The Care and the Repair of Clothing," Miss Mar garet Martin, Home Demonstration agent for Jackson County, talked concerning the daily care of cloth ing, the general care of coats, dresses, shoes, "hats, handbags, stockings, sweaters, gloves, and various fabrics. - Concerning the repair of clothing^ Miss Martin dis cussed mending, darning, reinforc ing, and patching, as well a^ The making over of partially worn clothing. For most of her .sug gestions Miss Martin gave the group demonstrations of how the repairs could be made or showed them garments that had already been carefully repaired. She gave members of the club government bulletins concerning the care and repair of clothing. After the program Mrs. Bryson conducted a business session dur ing which plans were made for a Christmas dinner to be given joint ly with the Pressley Club and the Weyhutta. Other home demonstra tion groups in the training school cafeteria on the evening of De cember 7. The husbands of all members will be special guests of the Christmas dinner. Senator from Idaho and present director of the Tenn essee Valley Authority, spoke to? the student body of Western Caro lina Teachers College in Hoey Au ditorium on Thursday, November (.3. Mr. Pope came to the college from his headquarters at Knox ville. Cooperative Effort and its Re lation to Future Peaceful Interna tional Relations was the subject of his address. Mr. Pope discussed the work of the TVA in providing rural electrification and pow^r to immense areas as an example of one worthwhile accomplishment of true cooperation. He advocated some type of international union after the war through which larg er powers can team-up and thwart any designs militaristic nations may have toward small defenseless countries. "We definitely can and must do this without surrendering any of our sovereignty," the speak er stated.
