To The Woman's Club
Mrs. O. E. Brookhyser was hostess
lo the Sylva Woman's Club last Tues
day evening, Jan. 16.
Installation of the new officers for
the following year were held. Those
taking office were: Miss Lucille Wil
son, President; Mrs. Harry Ferguson,
Vice-President and Mrs. Bill Fisher,
Sec.-Treas. The president appointed
the following committees to serve for
the ensuing year: Program, Mrs. M.
B. Madison, chairman; Mrs. Carl
Buchanan, Mrs. C. R. Askey; Defense,
Mrs. Harry Ferguson, chairman, Mrs.
W. T. oWise, Mrs. Odell Bankhead;
Ways and Means, Mrs. Cyrus Nich
olson, chairman, Miss Hicks Wilson,
Mrs. W. L. Jones.
After the business session bridge
was enjoyed during the evening. At
the conclusion of the playing Mrs.
Brookhyser served a salad plate and
coffee.
Education In Old
Russia Program For
Woman's "Club Meeting
Cullowhee ? Miss Nelle Bond, Miss
Mabel Tyree, and Mrs. Murry Richey
? were in charge of the program for
the Cullowhee Woman's Club held
Thursday evening ill the parlors of
Moqre Dormitory. Miss Tyree dis
cussed Education in Old Russia and
.in the United States of Soviet Russia,
and Miss Bond talked on the Status
? of Religion in Old and New Russia.
During a brief business session,
over which Mrs. W. A. Ashbrook
presided, Miss Anne Rabe made a
-report on the Sale of Christmas Seals;
Mrs. H, T. Hunter made an announce
ment concerning Red Cross Work,
and Mrs. Ashbrook named the nomi
nating committee, composed of Miss
Anne Hammond, Miss Anne Rabe,
,and Mrs. David Brown.
Hostesses for the evening were Miss
Claudia Baker, Miss Leonora Smittt,
Miss Clara Devane, Mrs. John Sey
mour.
Mrs. Ashbrook Is Heard

Cullowhee ? "When Father Comes
Home" was the subject of Mrs. W. A.
Ashbrook's ta^k before the Cujlowhee
Parent Parent-Teacher Association, '
held Thursday afternoon in the cafe
teria of the McKee Training School.
The second talk for the afternoon was
"Manners Today", by Mrs. Carl Kil
lian.
During a business session ever
which Miss Leonra Smith presided,
plans for improving attendance, lor
reaching distant parents by organiz
ing associations in nearby communi-,
tics, and for having some meetings at
night were discussed.
Hostesses for the afternoon were
Mrs. Ralph Sutton and Miss Edyth
Walker.

last week on business.
Miss Mildred Sutton, who is em
ployed in Charleston Ngivy Yards, is
spendy^g a few days at home with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Sut
ton and brother, T. B. Sutton, who
is spending his furlough at home.
Mr. Felix, \#ho is connected with
the TVA, is now working at Hender
sonville.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jones and family,

Parris Moore were at the home of
T. T. Jones on Sunday.
Barkers Creek choir met at the
home of Mr. Joe Messer Sunday after
noon. A large crowd was present.
Miss Georgia Brown spent Satur
day at Barkers Creek.

Mrs. W. T. Buchanan, spent a fifteen
day furlough with his wife the form

where she will be Assistant Manager
of the cafeteria at the Norfolk Army
Base.
M. O. 3-c Woodford B. Melton has
returned to New York -after spending
a thirty-day furlough with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Melton,
of Sylva and other relatives. M. O.
Melton has served seven months
overseas with the Navy.
1st Lt. Richard Melton has return
ed to Fort Bennin^Jpa., after spend
ing the week-endAvith his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Melton and
brother, M. O. Woodford B. Melton.
Pvt. Larry Melton is spending a
furlough with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Lambert Melton of Whittier.
Pvt. Melton has been in the Marines
three months.
Mr. Joe Campbell of Knoxville,
Tenn., has been visiting Mr. and Mrs.

In the game between Sylva High
and Bryson City last Friday, it was
necessary to play two extra periods to
break the tie, Sylva boys finally win
ning 33-29. The Sylva girls won 12-6.

day when they chalked up a winning
score of 48-46 over the strong Milli
g&n Buffalos. The defeat was the
first of the season for the East Tenn

Arrived In Pearl Harbor
PEARL HARBOR, T. H., Jan. 1.?
Among the new arrivals at the Pearl
Harbor Navy Yard is Joseph B. Thom
as of Sylva, N. C. Thomas joins the
thousands of workers in keeping the
ships of the Pacific Fleet fit to fight.
He is livtng in the civilian housing
area, "a city within itself", ,fc>cated
adjacent to the Navy Yard, and built
by the Navy for the war workers.

Good Conduct Medal
Cpl. Paul E. Deitz, of Webster, who
participated in the Normandy cam
paign as a member of a general ser
vice engineer regiment in France, has
been awarded the Good Conduct
Medal. The Herald has been inform
ed by his commanding officer in
France.
