Jeanne 'Nicholson Given Surprise Anniversary party On Friday evening Jeanne Nicholson was given a surprise party by a group of her friends. It was at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Nicholson and was celebrating the thirteenth anniversary of her birth. Bingo and other games were played, after which the guests were invited into the dining room where the table had been arranged with i the birthday cake as the center i piece. This was served with ice [ cream, candy, and coca-colas. The entire group then went to the Ritz theater to see "Blue Skies." | Those present were Peggie Sue Middleton, Patsy Buckner, Bennie I Lou Harris, Patsy Parris, Hilda I McGinnis, Gail Webber, and Joyce Nicholson, Lambert Hooper, Tom my Ferguson, Howard Wilson, T. The seed corn to be planted was ?rown in Buncombe county last summer by Charles Holiday and Hoyatt Plemmons while Mr. J. F. Corbin was the certified seed corn inspector for 'Buncombe county. Mr. Corbin knows the men and their corn and heartily resom mends its planting. He stresses the importanle of purchasing seed bag ged in the official North Carolina Crop Improvement Association bag. This white bag is recognized by the blue square with a red border at the top and bottom and stamped with a N. C. map in white the wording "Certified Seed?void without certification tag" is print ed on each bag. The bag must also bear the official blue tag of certi fied seitd. ????? Visual Aid Equipment Added To Department The Vocational Agriculture de partment and the Veteran Farm er. Training Group have secured - a complete line at visual aid equip ment to be used in their programs. This equipment includes one 16 millimeter sound movie projector together with two screens: an 8 x 10, and a portable 4 foor square -screen; a Triple A milimeter Slide machine; and a Mercury No. 2 camera for making pictures to use in the slide machine. An added asset to owning this equipment is the ability of bor rowing films from the Vocational Agriculture department of Ra leigh. In being granted the privilege not enjoyed by most babies, they chose for their mamas Mrs. Dan Moore, Miss Irma Mittle berg, and Mrs. Stedman Mitchell. After the babies were dressed in danity bonnets and bibs by their foster mamas, each was given his bottle for a race in feeding. Jake Bales proved to be the fastest feed er. The evening's merriment came to a close with the singing of se lections from the Battle of the Sexes In Song?amid flashing of lightning and rumblings of thun der of a springtime storm. # * * Miss Allison Has Buffet Supper Miss Nancy J. Allison enter tained with a surprise birthday supper for Boyd Sossamon on Tuesday evening at the home of her mother, Mrs. J. C. Allison. The house, decorated with a profusion of early spring flowers, formed a lovely setting for the affair. A color scheme of yellow and white was carried out. The supper was served buffet style from a iulile which had for its centei piece a bowl o:' daffodils and narcissus. At either end were placed white candles with a yellow daffodil molded on each. Card tables were placed in the living room and the guests' places were marked by hand painted place cards. On each table was a bud vase with daffodils and a white and yellow candle molded in the form of a calla lily. The guest list included besides Mr. Sossamon,.Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hardy, Misses Agnes Wilson, Helen Sossamon, Lela Moore Hall, and Dorothy Mae McKee; Elmer Neal, Jimmy Keener, Spurgeon Henry, and Jack Allison. * * * Home Makers Class Met With Mrs. Popplewell Mrs. Joe Popplewell was hostess for the meeting of the Homemak er's Sunday school class of the Scott's Creek Baptist church Tues day evening, April 1. Mrs. Roy Reed reviewed the book of Genesis. The class decided to study a book of the Bible each month. Mrs. Albert Robinson, president, CKrgguteri over the hnsinpss sp.ssinn. A social hour was held and Mrs. B. S. Hensley and Mrs. Roy Dal ton were winners in the contests. Mrs. Popplewell, assisted by her daughter, Verna Kay, and Mrs. Johnnie Watson, served refresh ments. PERSONALS Mrs. Mabel" Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Phillips and daughter Judith, and Miss Lucile Ashe of Winston-Salem were guest of Mrs. Geneva Smith and Children and Mrs. Hixie Ashe and Family of Webster for the Easter holidays. Mrs. Rixie Ashe has recently re turned to her home in Webster after spending the last five weeks with her mother Mrs. Sallie Ens ley of Apison, Tennessee. She was called to Apison on account of her mother falling and breaking her hip. Her mother is improving. Mr. ? and Mrs. Ernest Penland went to Hayesville Saturday to be with Mrs. Flora Davis who is crit Penland returned Sunday to his home in Webster, while Mrs. Pen land remained tor a longer stay. Miss Mildred Prtton, who has re signed her position a> chief book keeper at Sossamon Furniture Co., expects to leave tmis week for her home in Morgunton where she has accepted similar work with Orders Furniture Store. Miss Sossamon ! has taken an active part in the work of the Baptist church during her eight months stay h?rfe, as well as the social life of her group. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Settlemyer of Charlotte spent the Easter holi days here wTUTthetr parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Cowan of Greens Creelif. Mr. M. V. Higdon returned last Tuesday from Atlanta where he has been ill with influenza at the' home of Mrs. Higdon's sister, Mrs. Wiley King. Mr. Higdon is able to be back in his office for the prac tice of law. Mrs. John D. Davis and daugh ter, Cathryn, have returned home after spending the winter months in DeLand* Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Gil mer McCoy and son, Tim Douglas, who accompanied them to Fla., will remain for a year. Mr. McCoy has accepted a position with the DeHart filling station there. Mrs. Bob Davidson of Swan nanoa spent the week-end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J: S. Higdon. Another daughter, Mrs. Dot Owen of Fontana, was also here for the week-end. Miss Elva Rhea of Knoxville, Tenn. spent the Easter holidays here with her mother, Mrs. Mary Rhea. Miss Edith Garrett of Sylva and 1 Atlanta, Ga. spent the Easter sea son with her sister, Miss Nita Gar rett. in Winston-Salem. While there they attended the Easter services of the Mormons. J. Hubert Potts, who has been a patient at Harris Community hospital for several days, returned to his home last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Roberson and daughter, Barbara Ann, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. Raymond Stovall, and family. Mrs. E. L. Wilson is spending this week in Hendersonville with her son, E. L. Wilson, Jr., and family. Mrs. Sam Roan, Mrs. Elizabeth Davis and daughter, Anne, Miss Mildred Cowan and Miss Evelyn Sherrill were Asheville vistiors Sunday, going over to see Mrs. Frank M. Crawford, at Aston Park hospital. Mrs. Irene Cook of Pendleton, Oregon arrived last Thursday, hav ing been called to Cullowhee on account of the illness of her father, Mr. Tom Ledbetter. Mr. J. C. Led better of Delray Beach, Fla., a son of Mr. Ledbetter, arrived Monday of last week to be with him during his illness. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Bain and son, Edward, Mrs. J. W. Keener, Mrs. Henry Brady and daughter, Patty, and Jimmy Keener spent Sunday in Bryson City with Mr. and Mrs. James P. Myers. While there they attended the christening ceremony of Mr. and Mrs. Bain's grandson, Jimmy Myers. Among those from the Sylva church attendinng ? the district meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service at Long's Chapel, Lake Junaluska, today are Mrs. Harry Hastings, president of the local soeiefey, Mrs. W. L. Bryson, and aunt, Mrs. E. M, Lloyd. L_... * * * Camp Fire Girls Meet. The Camp Fire girls met Tues day evening with Bessta Bryson at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings Bryson. Their sponsors, Mrs. J. E. Buckner and Mrs. Howard Crawford, met with them. The vice-president, Audrey Jane Jones, presided. Instead of having a program the girls worked off some of their re quirements for second class. Games were played and peanuts, candy, and apples were served by the hosrtess.
