The milking cow needs consider ably more than the dry cow. When one considers the fact that normal milk contains about 87 per cent water it is easy to understand why a cow producing a large quantity of m.lk must have a large quantity of water. A cow producing 40Ibs. of milk in a day neecls approxi mately 120 pounds of water or a bout 3 pounds of water for each pound of milk. The supply of water should be pure, fresh, of a medium tempera ture and convenient so that the cow's production will not be re stricted by under consumption. Watering once a day is not suffi cient. A heavy producing cow can not drink enough water at one time to supply her needs lor a day. This is especially true in the winter ! when the water is very cold. Prob ably no investment in barn equip ment pays greater dividends than that made for individual drinking sups or a good concrete water* trough located in a convenient place where the ?ows can get fresh water as often as they desire. QUESTION?How can I prevent the infestation of roaches in my home? ANSWER?One of the best ways to prevent roaches from becoming established in a home is to watch carefully all baskets or boxes of food supplies and laundry brought into the house. Roaches hide among packages and about clothing and are frequently carried from place' to place. Kill these stray roaches with a fly swatter, or, if they are encountered unexpectly and no weapon is at hand, crush them un derfoot. Trade at roach-free stores. For the immediate elimination of roaches in tight rooms, there is nothing better than a thorough fumigation by a professional fum igator. Fumigations are expensive, however, and in congested"a*eas, where reinfestation is apt to take place quickly, the expense is sel dom warranted. In more loosely constructed buildings the fum.gant usually escapes so fast that the eggs of roaches, protected in the egg capsules, are not killed, and a sec ond fumigation about 3 or 4 weeks later may be necessary. Crack fillers, such as putty, plastic wood, or plaster of paris, can be used effectively in closing many openings used by roaches as avenues of escape to hiding places. These cracks and openings can be looted by Watching the roaches run for concealment.
