of their daughter, Betty Love, to
Edwin C. McDowell of Auburn
dale, Florida. The wedding will
take place Tuesday, December 23,

Class To Give Program
The dance pupils of Mrs. Evelyn
Worthingson of Sylva, Canton, and
Waynesville will present a pro
gram of dancing at the* Sylva Ele
mentary school auditorium on Fri
day evening, December 19, at 7:30
P. M. Admission will T>e 25 and 50
cents and the proceeds w\ll go to

Bridge Club Met
With Mrs. Hardy
The Thursday Nite Bridge club
met last week with Mrs. Rudy
Hardy at the home of her sister,
Mrs. Velt Wilson. The house was
beautifully decorated for the
Christmas season.
Two tables were made up for
play. Instead of giving prizes as
is usually done, the members ex
changed gifts.
Mrs. Hardy served a salad
course, nuts, and mints.
Those playing were Misses Agnes
Wilson, Rebecca Sue Cannon, Mary
Henson, Dorothy Mae McKee, Lou
Elsie Parker, Mrs. Dan B. Hooper,
Mrs. Clyde Rector, and Mrs. Char
les Poteet.

Young Adult S.S. Class
Enjoys Christmas Party

had charge of the Christmas party
which the Young Adult Sunday
School class of the . Methodist
church enjoyed on Monday even
ing in Allison building. Nineteen
members and two guests, Mr. and
Mrs. N. R. Beacham, were present
for the affair.
The room was beautifully deco
rated to carry out the Christmas
theme. A gaily decorated Christ
mas tree stood in one corner. Sev
eral Christmas games were play
ed under Mrs. Barkeley's direc
tion. Gifts were exchanged.
The hosts served cookies and
coffee.

Halcyon Club Has i
Christmas Dinner Party
The annual Christmas dinner of
| the Halcyon club was held on last
Wednesday evening at Maple
Springs. Following the dinner the
club had a business session at
which time the treasurer made her
yearly report as follows: To make
money they had a Bingo party,
| Valentine supper, Easter bazaar,
waffle iron chance sale, and sev
eral cake sales, sold personal note
sheets and cooperated with the
junior club in running the Bingo
stand on July 4th. Expenditures
were: $200 to the band, $50 to
Home Economics department in
Sylva high school, $20 to fund for
headquarters for Women's Federa
ted clubs, $12 for 4th of July cele
bration, $10 for tonsillectomy for
Jackson county girl,- $5 for gift for
J child at Samarcand, bought two
! gifts for children in correction
school, contributed to international
children's fund, to Walter Reed
hospital birthday fund,. Philippino
club fund, and to endowment fund,
have organized a junior woman's
club, and entertained the Jack
son County Federated Women's
clubs at dinner.
A nominating committee was
named with Mrs. Grayson Cope,
chairman, Mrs. Gudger Fortner,
and Miss Rebecca Sue Cannon.
Following the business session
the members went to the home of
Miss Nancy Allison where a des
sert course consisting of individual
iced cakes and each bearing a
lighted candle, coitee, and nuts
were served. The house was at
tractively decorated with Christ
mas greens. An exchange of Christ
mas gifts was enjoyed by the mem
bers during the social hour.
Mrs. M. D. Madison, a former
sponsorer of the club, was a special
guest and in appreciation of her
services to the club she was given
i a gift from the club during the
I social hour.
| Carrie Rhodes Circle
Has Christmas Party
On Monday evening, Dec. 8, the
Carrie Rhodes circle of the Metho
dist church with Mrs. Raymon"
Stovall for their annual Christmas
party. The Stovall home, with its
decorations of red candles and
holly, formed a lovely setting for
the dinner served to 20 members
at the dining room table and at
small tables placed in the living
room. Apple Santa Clauses were
given as favors.

devotional and Mrs. Mary R. Cow
an was in charge of the program
and Mrs. O. E. Monteith directed
the recreational period.
A shower of gifts was given
Mrs. W. H. Crawford and her in
fant daughter. The members ex
changed gifts.

Sylva H.D. Club Meets
With Mrs. Bookhyser
The December meeting of the
Sylva Home Demonstration Club
| was held with Mrs. O. E. Brook
hyser at her home on December
15. This was an all-day meeting
with the members bringing dishes
for a covered dish lunch. Gifts were
exchanged before adjournment.

TEL Sunday School
Class Meets
The TEL Sunday School class of
the Beta Baptist church met with
Mrs. Dock Harris Thursday, Dec.
4, in an all-day meeting. The
first part of the day was filled by
the members visiting with each
other. Each member carried a cov
ered dish and at noon the dinner
was spread and 23 members and
visitors enjoyed the feast.
Mrs. D. G. Bryson opened the
afternoon session with an appro
priate devotional. Then the busi
ness was taken up and plans were
made to prepare and send a Christ
mas package to the little girl which
the Class has adopted in the Ken
nedy Orphanage. Arrangements
were made to pack a Christmas
basket of fruits and nuts to send
to the aged and sick persons of
the community.
After the business was over each
member drew a name and exchang
ed Christmas gifts. Secret Pals'
names for the coming year were
drawn and Pals of 1947 were re
vealed.
The January meeting will be
held with Mrs. George C. Snyder
In January.
PERSONALS
Mrs. J. B. Case and children,
Lawrence and Peggy, will leave
Friday for Miami, Fla. where they
will spend the Christmas holidays
with their husband and father, J.
B. Case.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh V. Ferguson
are leaving today for Nashville,
Tenn. to make their home. Mr.
Feiguson will prepare to enter the
ministry at Travecka College. Mrs. I
Feiguson has been visiting her i
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoi- I
den at Speedwell for the past ten
days.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bryson of
Fort Smith, Arkansas were here
last week, making a short visit
with his mother, Mrs. D. L. Bry
son and sister, Mrs. E. M. Lloyd.
Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Crisp, who
have made their home in Dillsboro
for a number of years left Mon
day for East Flat Hock where they
will make their home with their
daughter, Mrs. 3. T. Potts.

Harry Hastings, --who has been a
student at State College this year,
has returned home and is with
his mother, Mrs. H. R. Hastings.

Juanita Davis of Sylva will join
Miss Aurelia Harris and Miss Mary
Roberts of Asheville and they will
leave Sunday to spend their Christ
mas vacation in Florida.
William C. Thompson of Vienna,
Va., visited his father, S. C. Thomp
son Monday through Thursday of
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cooper and
son, Pat, will arrive the latter part
of this week from Lost Creek, W.
Va., to spend the Cnristmus holi
days with Airs. Cooper's parents,

Hugh Monteith, Jr., has returned
to Gardner- Webb College after
spending the week-end with his

Buchanan. His mother will ac

Beta Grammar School
Entertains PTA Group
The children of the Beta Gram
mar School entertained the Beta
PTA with a Christmas program on
Monday December 5.
The program was opened with
a Christmas play presented by
Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Hensley's
room. Mrs. Moss' 7th grade sang
carols with three of her pupils par
ticipating at the piano.
Proceeding with the program,
Mrs. Ginn, president of the PTA,
was in charge. 30 members were
present with numerous visitors. A
prize of one dollar was given to
Mrs. Reed's room for having the
most mothers present.
Christmas gifts were exchanged
by members and a music recital
was given by Miss Candler's pupils

Celebrates Birthday
Mrs. Sam Crisp celebrated her
76t h birthday on Sunday, Novem
ber 30 at her home irf. Dillsboro.
Five of her seven children were
present for the happy occasion.
Others joining with her in the cele
bration were 25 grandchildren, 5
great grandchildren, one sister,
Mrs. Walker Woody of Bryson City,'
one brother, Jim Sfruler of Dills
boro and a number of friends.
Dinner was served buffet style
with a color scheme of pink and'
white carried out in the decora- j
tions. A granddaughter, Mrs. Wood
row Cox, welcomed the guests and
all joined in singing Happy Birth
day to Mrs. Crisp.
The honoree received a number
of lovely gilts.

tist church gave her a surprise
birthday dinner on Tuesday, De
cember 9 in one of the rooms of
the church, which had been deco
rated in holly with red candles.
The table also emphasized the
Chi istmas motif in ti.e place cards
and other decorations.
Mrs. Hunter was given a lovely
black leather handbag. The secret
sisters in the class exchanged gifts.

an all-day meeting at which time

studied with Mrs. C. M. Warren
as teacher.
A morning session was held af
ter which a pot-luck dinner was
