Allen Has Party Mrs. Charles Allen entertained for her son, Charles Hudson," hon oring him on his se\enth birthday anniversary at a party on Satur day afternoon at their home. After enjoying a number of garner the children were served cake, ice cream, and fruit punch. Mrs. Allen was assisted in serving by Mrs. William Allen and Mrs. Martha McNeill. At Picnic | On Monday evening Mrs. Ed Baldridge was hostess for the May meeting of the Wesleyan Service Guild with 12 members present. She met her guests at the city playground where a picnic was enjoyed. Weiners and marshmal lows w^re toasted over an open lire and eaten with the other de licious picnic food. > Following the supper the group went to Mrs. Baldridge's home where Dr. Noracella Wilson pre sided over a business meeting. It was reported that the new electric stove for the kitchen in Allison Building had been selected and the guild members made plans to pay their part on it. Miss Dair Swanson was elected secretary to fill the place left vacant when Mrs. Frances Luce left. Mrs. Gudger Fortner presented the devotional on the theme, The Lord Speaks. Edwina Ward Is Wed To Thurman Willard Miss Edwina Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milas Ward of Sylva, and Thurman Willard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Williard of Greensboro, were married Tuesday, June 1, at 630 p. m. at Scott's Creek Baptist church. Rev. T. F. Deitz, assisted ' ? by Rev. B. S. Hensley, performed the ceremony. The vows were spoken before a trellis covered with greenery and rambler roses, ! placed in front of a background of pines. On either - side of the trellis were placed seven-branched candelabra holding lighted cath edral tapers. A program of wedding music was presented by Miss Eddie Lou Terrell, pianist, and Mrs. Tommy Clayton, vocalist. Miss Terrell played "Traumerei" by Schumann and ''Believe Me if Those Endear ing Young Charms". The tradi tional wedding marches were used and the Bridal cViorus was played softly during the ceremony. - Mrs Clayton sang "I Love You Truly" by Carrie Jacobs Bond an4"Al - ways", by Irving Berlin. The bride, given in marriage by her uncle, Roy Reed, wore a white two-piece dress with white acces sories. She carried a white Bible topped with a corsage of red roses which she detached later and wore with her going away suit. Mrs. William L. Ashe, ^sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She was dressed in a two piece white dress and carried a bouquet of red roses. William L. Ashe served as best man and the ushers were Max Clayton, Mike Turner, Frank Mon teith, Jr., and Darnell Ward, broth er of the bride. Following the ceremony a recep tion was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Harris, uncle and aunt of the bride for the bridal party, relatives and close friends. The table, covered with a hand made lace cloth, was decorated with mixed summer flowers. The bride's cake, three tiered and topped with a bride and bridegroom statuette, and erUtwined with pink roses was placed at one side of the table. It was cut and served with punch. Later the eouple left for ar^wed ding trip through Eastern Caro lina and will go to Liberty to be with his parents until their new home is finished. * * * U.D.C. Chapter Has Picnic Meeting On Thursday evening, Mrs. J. H. Wilson and Mrs. Ralph Robert son, working for her mother, Mrs. W. C. Soderquist, who was unable to attend, were hostesses for the June meeting of the B. H. Cathey chapter, United daughters of the Confederacy: They had an out doors supper at the picnic ground at the Community house. C. k * Miss Bryson Honored At Pre-Nuptial Parties Miss Mary Cecil Bryson, who' will be married on June !19 toI William Patterson of Atlanta, has been honored at two pre-nuptial1 parties during the past week. Mrs. Joe 0 Davis, Mrs. Mary Queen, and Mrs. Roy Reed enter tained with a miscellaneous show er on Wednesday, June 2. at the home of Mrs. Reed. The house' was decorated with vases of mixed -?ummer flowers. .*? veral contests were enjoyed. Winners :n these, Mrs. ^)enms Fisher and .Mrs. Rill Wilson, gave their prizes to the .vnoree. Again on Tuesday evening, June 8, Miss Bryson was honor guest when Mrs. Ray Cogdill, Mrs. Fe lix Picklesimer, and Mrs. A. M. Anderson were hostesses at a mis cellaneous shower. The Cogdill's home made a lovely setting for the affair. The living room was dee orated in pink glads and mixed summer flowers, carrying out the pink and white color scheme. In the dining room the lace cov ered table was centered with a lovely arrangement of white lilies, white sweet peas, and greenery. | White candles in crystal holders I completed the decorations. Contests carrying out the bridal idea were played and the winners were Miss Dortha Hennessee, Mrs. Joe Davis, and Mrs. Roy Reed, who presented their awards to the honoree. The hostesses served a sweet salad, ice cream and white cup cakes iced in pink rosebuds. Miss Bryson was then invited into the dining room where she found the table laden with beauti ful packages which held gifts pre sented by the 30 guests attending l the party. | * * Gaynelle Murray Circle Met With Mrs. Case Twenty members of the Gay nelle Murray circle of the Sylva Baptist church met Monday eve 1 ning at the home of Mrs. J. B. Case, for the June meeting. The president, Mrs. Jesse Buchanan, presided over the business session. Miss Hattie Hilda Sutton gave the devotional and had charge of the program on the topic, "Train ing World Workers for World Mis sions." During the social hour refresh ments were served and Mrs. Har ry Allman was presented with a shower of gifts. In the future the meetings will be held at 8 p.m. instead of at 7:30, as during the winter months. * * * Halcyon Club Met With Mrs. Fortner The Halcyon Woman's club met j last Wednesday evening with Mrs. I Gudger Fortner at her home in the Ferguson apartments. Four teen members were present and the president, Mrs. Roger Dillard, con ducted the business session. Plans were completed for a benefit pic nic and Bingo party to be held at the Community house next Mon day evening. Miss Mary Johnston, Home Dem onstration agent, spoke to the mem bers on Modem Homes, emphasiz ing the kitchen. She told of some she visited while on a recent trip to Washington. The hostess served a salad plate. house for the business meeting, over which the president, Mrs. J. A. Bryson, presided. A full re port of the district meeting held nere in May was given with all items expense and other busi ness cleared up. Other routine matters were taken up. The chap ter voted not to disband durinng the summer months but to have pot -luck dinners and social meet ings during July and August, these to be held at the community house or with some member who has not been able to attend recently. Mrs. Dan Tompkins and Mrs. J. B. En sley will make the plans for the July meeting and Miss Bertha] Cunningham and Mrs. Dora Lee Collins will plan the one lo: Aug ust. County Council For 4-H > Clubs Has Meet, June 5 The Jackson County 4-H club council meeting met at the court house on Saturday, June 5. The president, Ray Kinsland, of the Qualla club, opened' the meeting by using the 4-H pledge and motto, followed by several songs. The minutes of the last meeting were' read by the secretary, Hattalean' Frizzell, of the Cope Creek club:! Tne roll call was then heard for the various clubs. A long table was arranged on the lawn with the birthday cake and other birthday decorations. The cake was served with ice cream, nuts, and candy.
