CANCER DETECTION
CENTER RENDERING
VALUABLE SERVICE
Have you been to the Sylva Can?.eer
Detection Center at C. J.
Harris hospital for your examination?
If you haven't you are
missing an opportunity. The counter
is open every Friday. Registration
is from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
"Examinatins are free to all wom ?n,
35 or over, and to all men 40
or over, and to anyone with a
symptom of "danger signal", reeardlpu
of ace.
Frequently there are more applicants
for examination than can
lie- accommodated. Therefore, in
<order that those who live at a
distance may be sure of an examination
and thus not make a trip
in vain, priorities will be sent on
all requests to all who live 20 miles
or more from Sylva. Address
your request to C. J. Harris Hospital,
Sylva, indicating two dates
?on which you could come for examination.
It is remarkable the number of
?early cases of cancer that have
'been uncovered in this clinic. All
within the age limit, or with definite
symptoms should make an
^effort to have their physical examination
at the earliest time.
There are two good films on
cancer that are available through
the State Board of Health for use
by clubs or other organizations.
""Traitor Within", is an informative
film, showing graphically in
color the early symptoms of cancer,
how the abnormal cancer cells
multiply and spread throughout
the body if the symptoms are
ignored. This is good for high
school students as well as adults.
The other film, "Miracle Money",
? Mr Hicf rinf Attnrnov
as ait cALuiug nil . tvw
story, in which two quack doctors
are exposed. Both are 16mm
sound films. Anyone desiring to
use the films should contact Miss
Frances Barr, at the Cancer center,
Sylva, or mail at Franklin,
N. C.

A quick look
AROUND W.N.C.
Hendersonville ? A $21,500,000
flood control program for the
French Broad River in Western
North Carolina has been proposed
by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The proposal was in a report sent
to President Truman last week.
The proposal presented in detail
a plan for flood control protection
which includes detention basins,
levees and channel improvements,
Gordon R. Clapp, chairman of the
board, said.
Franklin ? Approximately 25
Franklin High school football boys,
honor guests of the occasion, were
wide-eyed and wide-eared for the
address 01 (Jan u. anaveiy, neaa
coach at the University of North
Carolina at last Wednesday evening's
football banquet held at the
Slagle Memorial building.
Brevard ? The state fire control
program in Transylvania
county has been discontinued.
Sponsored by county, state and
federal funds, the program has
been operated under the direction
of the North Carolina Department
of Conservation and Development.
The state withdrew its
support when the county board
insisted on retaining Frank Whitmire
as county fire warden.
Asheville ? Former U. S. Senator
Robert R. Reynolds, of Asheville,
known for doing the unexpected
in politics, crossed up strategy
of leaders throughout North
Carolina by announcing that he
would contest the seat of Senator
Frank P. Graham in the May 27th
Democratic Primary. His announcement
stumped political strategists,
as they expected him to op.
pose Senator Hoey.
Waynesville ? Indications are
that a majority of the office holders
of Haywood county will be
candidates for the Democratic
nomination in the May primary.
Forest City ? A drive for telephones
in the Sunshine-Golden
Valley area and more electric
power lines for the Andrews Mill
section was launched last week
