PRACTICE FOOTBALL
GAME TO BE PLAYED
THURS. AT WCTC
WCTC, Cullowhee ? The Western
Carolina Catamounts will top
off their spring football drills
Thursday night with an underthe-ligh.s
full-length scrimmage
game.
The pressure will be on as the
beys play a regulation game. Conditions
prevailing in the Catamount
line are of uncertain status
owing to the new boys filling in
the gaps opened up by graduation.
Tackles Dan Robinson and Buffalo
Humphries, guards Art Byrd
and Von Ray Harris and Center
Hugh Constance all left via the
sneepskin route leaving the waj
open for new boys to strut their
stuff.
Coach Young is well pleased
with the showing his boys have
made in the spring drills and is
especially well pleased with guarc
Effie Stewart who is taking ovei
where Little All-America Byrd
left off.
In the backfield Young is wel
set with Ralph McConnell, Hershey
Hipps, Dick White, Mach
Bowman, Paul Rogers and a hosi
of other returning lettermer
and plenty of power coming up
from the B squad.
It is the line that looks doubtful
if any phase of the team does

SYLVA PLOWBOYS
READYING FOR
OPENING GAME
The Sylva Plowboys of the
Western Carolina Industrial baseball
league, are priming steadily
for their opening game with Beacon
Mills at Mark Watson Field
on Saturday April 22.
The Sylva team, according to
Skipper Jim Barnwell, will play
a couple or three exhibition games
before cracking the season.
The team is taking shape rapid1
ly. Positions are being filled and
battles are raging for starting
berths. Veo Rhodes and Bill Powell
give the team considerable
strength in the catching department.
On the mound four capable
^ tar ting pitchers are working. Jim
Cunningham, Warren Deyermond.
| Rex Benton and Joe Fountain
\form a big-four mound corps, all
' of whom have had experience in
professional baseball.
Benton pitched as high as Class
A, performing in the Sally League
( one season. Fountain twirled for
' Rocky Mount, and Cunningham
and Deyermond both worked in
' th? Western Carolina Class D
league. Cunningham later went
io Elizabethton, Tenn., in the Ap-,
palachian League.
1 The infield is also taking shape
fast with Jack Cunningham on
first base, Junior Sherrill at sec'
ond, Pee Wee Hamilton at short
and Ben Dillard on third. As yet,
shortstop J. D. Morgan has not re1
ported for practice.
In the outfield will be Barn>

Should the Sylva pitching pan
out and the potential hitting pow"I

tit its stride, the Plowboys will
" cause a lot of trouble to the WNC
i fall.
) Young expects the Cats to hurt
from lack of experience during the
first of the season, but he feels
. that they will come around before
f many games have been played.
1 "We'll cause plenty of trouble for
? someone," he says.

Are your $50 bills good? A
Greenville, S. C. store owner did
not know his $50 bills. Two men
posing as officers walked into his
store and asked about counterIndustrial
big shot teams. Enka,
Berkeley and Beacon, the three
teams that monopolized the first
three places in the league last
summer, probably will find tough
sledding against the competition
coming up.
