Why Grow
Expensive Corn?
If you gathered less than 50
aushels of corn from each acre
Df your corn field last year, Jou ,
did not get decent pay for your
Labor and the use of your land.
North Carolina farmers have increased
their acerage corn yield
by more than 10 bushels per acre
during the past 10 years. Jackson
County farmers have harvested
yields of more than 100 bushels
per acre. These increased yields

ing use of the five accepted improved
production steps which
will mean higher yields on Jackson
County farms. The steps are
as follows:
FIRST: Plant a producing seed.
Adapted hybrids can be expected
to increase the yield by at least
10 bushels per acre. The most
widely accepted hybrid for this
County is yellow hybrid U. S.
282, also W. Va. hybrid 1163 has
proven good at higher elevations.
Hybrid Dixie 17 yields well but
lacks stalk strength. U. S. 282
seed is scarce this year. Adapted
hybrids are highly recommended,
but select a good yielding openpollenated
variety in preference
to a questioned hybrid.
SECOND: Fertilize correctly.
300 lbs. to 400 lbs. of 6-8-6 or
7-7-7 per acre is recommended.
The nitrogen, indicated by the
first figure on the bag, is the important
part of the corn fertilizer.
Heavier applications of low nitrogen
fertilizer are needed. Do
not place the seed in contact with
fertilizer in the row.
THIRD: Provide a good stand.
Plants standing 15 inches apart
in 42 inch (3Vfc feet) rows will
produce good yields if properly
fertilized and cultivated.
FOURTH: Avoid late or deep
cultivation. Control weeds by
shallow cultivation before corn is
large. The section harrow or weeder
will kill most of the weeds if
used frequently before corn germinates
(comes up) and until
plants are three to four inches
tall. Leave field clean of weeds
by shallow cultivation and stop
cultivating at not more than waist
high.
FIFTH: Top-dress with nitrogen
for desired yield. Add top-dressing
before the corn is more than
knee high. Two pounds of available
nitrogen may be expected to
increase the yield by one bushel
