Ifffe may bo permitted a w ord we would like to magnify the profession of the teacher. One reason why the schools are not better than they are that teaching is not considered as i profession. Boys and girls go in to teaching as a stepping stone to something else to make money in order to prepare for some thine else. If we take the most successful teachers and those who have attained any preemi nence as teachers we find that they have made it a profession and have studied it just as a doc tor does medicine or a lawyer does law teaching should be put on the same level and really is better. Lawyers and doctors are to cure abnormal conditions, A teacher is to train a normal conditioned person to develope themselves. Doctors and lawyers only have the few rare occasions the teacher has the child for a long time, and still they do their work half trained and in a slip ahod way saying often times. Oh I am doing this only for a little while; soon I will do some thing elie. If you want to do mankind a benefit be a teacher, but do it with the thought of making it your life work and go in to make a success of it and you go into it with this idea you will attain eminence. SPRINQ CREEK ITEMS. vjuiteasaa airair occured on Little Pine creek last Monday afternoon when Mr. Geo. Red mon tcok his own life. Domestic trouble led him to say in the presence of his wife that he was going to end his life and picking p his gun he sat down and placing the barrell against his stomach he fired, dying instant ly. The only person present was his wife. She said he told her he was going to kill himself but she did not believe him and even when he placed the gan as be did she did not still acredit his threat. Mr. Kedmon lived about Paynes Chapel. His body was brought to Dry Pond for burial on Tuesday. It is sad to chronicle such happenings. Last Tuesday was quite a ser ous day on the railroad near Marshall. Monday evening a rock slipped down near.the'track and scraped the "special," a car load of rara hnrses wcro nn th train and one of - the jockeys jumpod out and was somewhat hurt. A short time afterwards the dirt moved down andp02 was delayed seven hours, hardly had it passed when a larger slide came down and it was impossible to cjean away the track, so a track was built around and 86, 28 and 12 came through after two o'clock. The work of clean lngftbe track was quite a job and is finished after a couple of days work. The farmers aie making rapid progress preparing for the com ing crops, and it is predicted by many that the yield of the com ing season will be much greater than that of the previous year, The feed supply is almost ex hausted in our community and the stock raisers are glad to welcome every ray of sunshine, Knowing mat it will onng grass and foliage which is so soon to be needed. Glad to note that the people of our community are not dis cussing the farming business a lone. but are taking up the great and important questions in re gard to better ' roads, better schools, better social life, better churches and various other sub jects, which if rightly developed and carried out will prove a great blessing to all and bring about higher planes of life in every respect. Our high school which proved to be a great success has just closed. We bid God-speed to the worthy instructors, trusting that future lields of labor which they enter, may receive a great portion of the vast instruction imparted to us. We wish to thank each and every teacheV for the gallant and heroic ser vice rendered in our community. We as a people are glad to pres ent you to the public as our wor thy teachers, the names of which are as follows: iJrof. G. C. Brown, principal, Prof. S. J. Peek, Miss Flora Lusk, assist ants. Sunday schools and prayer meetings are being organized and carried on with great suc cess. May all be benefitted by their existence. Friday, Saturday and Sunday last; the Fifth Sunday meeting of the Newfound Baptist Asso ciation met with the Baptist church at the Flats of Spring Creek. The meeting was well attended and all present seemed to enjoy the exercises, Rev: Wellons, pastor of M. E. Church, delivered the introductory ser mon giving a very able discourse. The question as to the needs of the association and how they should be met, was very interest ingly discussed by the following speakers: Jno. D. Balding, Rev Wellona, Rev. R. H. Hipps Hon. T. L. Plemmons. Another interesting feature of the meeting was the denuncia tion of Russellism by Hon. T. L Plemmons, Rev. Rob Cogdill who declared, that Russellism should be eradicated, and never again be permitted to poison the christian atmosphere of our fair land. Best wishes to The News-Re cord. Sunny South ROOSEVELT APPROVED OF RE CIPROCITY WITH CANADA. In case anyone is Inclined to favor the nomination of Roose velt rather than Taft on account of the latter's effort to have' re ciprocity with Canada the fol lowing extracts 'from speeches will show Roosovelts ideas on the subject: Statement of Roosevelt a t Grand Rapids, Mich., on Feb. 11,1911. "Here, friends in Michi gan, right on the northern front ier, I have the peculiar right to say a word of CONGRATULA TION to you and to all of us ON THE LIKELIHOOD THAT WE SHALL SOON HAVE CLOSER RECIPROCAL TARIFF an trade relations WITH THE GREAT NATION TO THE NORTH OF US. And I feel pleased, primarily because I wis to see the two peoples, the Can adian and the American peoples drawn together by the closest ties on a footing of complete quality of interest and mutual respect. The following letter written by a friend of mine to the New York Sun just after Roosevelt's defeat in the primaries in New York last month shows ; that he is by no means always winner: "New York, Mar. 25, 1912. As we all know, he was "licked." The next time I met him was at the Chicago Convention which nominated Blaine; and you , will remember, he and Curtis bitterly opposed Blaine's nomination. He was "licked" again. Everyone knows that at the recent election ha was beaten to a frazzle." In fact, I think yoa will agiee with me, that every time he has "thrown his bat in the ring and stripped to the buff he has been licked" and the only time he has been successful' has been when he has gone with the tide." - "Taft Republican." Now is a good time to get on the winning .side and climb on the "Taft Band Wagon" as it is already crowded with delegates to the National Convention and more are getting on at every primary and state convention. Jervis, deceased, late of the- coun ty of Madison, North Carolina, this is to notify all persons having, claims a- gainst the estate of said deceased to exhibit them to 1;he undersigned at his place of business in Marshall, N. on or before twelve months from the date hereof, or this notice will be pleaded in bar, of their recovery. All persons indebted to said estate will please make immediate payment. This the 2?r..i clay (.f March l!i)2. j. wilky w Indian Gap, North State, February 24, 1912. To the folks on the farmr I notice that my Republican friends down at the "county site" are pulling off a newspaper controversy warm and wordy in regard to Republican presidential timber. One politician, who is a lawyer of ability, arraigns Mr. Taft for many mistakes and makes a strong presentation of tte claims of Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency. Ho says that Taft has not proven to be what he considers a good Republican and that he insulted some Republicans some way; and he went ou to say: I believe he said 114,000, but I'm not sure he said that many; you see that woud be pretty big insult. And he claims that Taft got mixed up some way in appoint ing a judge and selected a man that wasn't politically qualified for the place. Then this correspondent says he don't like Taft's way of doing business with Canada. But if I remember aright about that Canada matter there was noth ing doing." A wealthy manufacturer who has recently immigrated hither replies to the above charges and that the question as to which is the best Republican, Taft or Roosevelt, is unimportant a s compared with t h e question, which has made the best Presi dent? And that looks like sound doctrine, but my friend might as well undertake to preach sin un to salvation as to preach that doctrine in this vicinity or the suburbs hereof. And he quotes a Massachusetts man who says that the difference between Taft and Roosevelt in dealing with the trusts is that Taft uses the law and Roosevelt uses harsh language. Now the man quoted didn't say what he meant by "harsh language" but I presume he either meant wind and gas or profanity; possibly the latter; because 'it's known that Roosevelt sometimes applies that remedy to aggravate cases emember distinctly that that's the remeiy he applied in 1903 when some Republicans objected to Taft on the ground that his religious belief was not scrip turial." A prominent county official comes to Mr. Taft s. relief and makes a strong defense of his policies and condemns the Roose velt policies, tie gives various reasons why Madison should not help put the- "'rough rider'' in the saddle, ; He seems to think that Mr Taft had some grounds for hi3 attitude towards Republican pol itics in North Carolina, and speaks of the gnashing of teeth and other troubles between the "outs"-and "ins." ; ; He says that if the pie counter were eliminated from politics both parties would be more pa triotic. : And he is right about that.. But I fear that if there were no pie-counter there would bo no politics. Pie-counter" an! "politics" are s o nearly identical that if you were to e liunfnate one there would be none of the other left. It would be like eliminating the darkies from the Degroes. A farmer , politician who re sides near , the "county site" comes out in a strong i article in which he don't take the- last named correspondent's position; but I believe he would take it if it's satisfactory all round. And I notice that another gentleman announced specifically that he is desirous of taking the same posi tion.
