t ... A Neglected Asset Marriage Licerfsef ". ACCORDING TO THE Forest Service, in the South are to "be found more than thirty mNlton acres of cut over lands, , now idle and unproductive. To this vast area already larjfer -than the Btate of Mississipi i and several times the size of the famed de vastated regions, of France and Belgium are being added, as a result of lumber operations and forest fires, at least four million . acres each year. Furlhermore, the same authority says that by far the greater portion of ihese lands is suitable only for timber growing, which means that if they ever again are to serve a useful purpose, it will benccomp lishedonly through a gigantic schome of reforestation, While this statement may contain noth ing new to those acquainted with the 8ituati. n, it does forcefully - c ill to mind the fact that utiliza tion of these idle lands is perhaps the greatest economic problem facing the Southern States So long as these great cut-over areas present the aspect of a man made desert, the effect will be just as unsetting economically as would be the idleness of thousands of fsrms Of course, considerable pro gress has been made in the way of c- n verting thousands of acres of this cut-over land into pre dictive farms, 1 ut admittedly t lere are great stretches of this land which are better suited to the growing of trees than to the ns' own Tent, to Queen Ann production of farm crops.
