In a recent issue of the At lanta Georgian notice is given of his winning the annual ora torical contest at Atlanta Law School, f or which he received a gold medal offered each year by the faculty He is to speak at the commencement exercises . which are s6tn to be held,, The News Record Natural Bridge, Va. May 8 1923 I and my entire family were great lv shocked when we received thro ugh the columnar of the Nevvs Re cord the announcement that J. W,' Nelson had gone' to his last long sleep. Friendship is a thing that is born, not bought.. It is a product of kindred and congenial charac tors. Everybody cannot be friends in the close and rich sense of the word. . There must be something in the heart and soul of one that makes him akin in love and sym pathy with other people before he can he true friend to everbody. That largeness of character .is. not given to everyone. If any one man ever possessed such power of character , it' was J. W. Nelson. lie came as near being a friend to everybody as any. one man can be. The secret of that fact was that he possessed a big generous soul. He did not easily forget his friends. We had such a friendly, brotherly letter from him while he was in Raleigh. While I and my family lived in Marshall he nevcY let an opportunity pass of showing his pastor and his family kindness and generosity, He was so unassuming too in all his kind ness He never wanted his left hand to know what his right hand was doing. I have been a pastor for twenty years. 1 have been the pastor of seven churches. He was one of the best deacons and most 'helpful members frhave ever known in any church I have served AMOSLARY, County Summer School Opens May 30th. A. and Temporary Certi ficates are required to attend a lummer school if- they expect to teach next year. Those holding the Elementary B Certificate may renew their certificate for a term of three years by attending. There are a number of these Elementary cer tificates that should be renewed this year. . 4 . The Summer School will be con ducted on somewhat the same plan that it was last year. A friend is gone I We shall not have Him with us Here again. Although his presence we shall .crave As deserts do the rain. It is decreed that each shall pass But once this trying way; ' And, like the dew upon the grass. Each has but a short stay. A friend is gone. - He is not dead; A fact some may deny. Believe in Me the Savior said, "And thou shall never die." A friend bc!toved"f1e proved his faith By living right while here;, And so to him has come no death,' . But grander life else-where. 1 At home, in legislative hall; In store, or church, or street. He held the confidence of all, ' v And friends he liked to greet.
