Saturday the 21st was the opening and celebration of the completion of the new building of the Bank of French Broad A large number of people came to Marshall to pay their respects and to do honor to the opening of the new building Refreshments were served bountiously to every One and souvenirs given ' away. More than three thousand people passed through the new .build ing and partook of the hospitality of the bank. v The new building would do credit to any city in North Car olina. It is a three story, fire proof, r-inforced concrete build ing. The second and third floors devoted to offices. There is a 'good opportunity for any busi ness requiring first cjass offices Steam heated, '- with all modern water appliances and fixtures. VVe especially congratulate the bank on the feature of providing a ladies rest room on the first floor, which . is provided wi.th toilet, 'wash basin, table and chairs. This' has been long needed. There is nothing in Asheville equal to it. Mrs. Katie M. Gudger was mistress of ceremonies and in troduced the folfowing speakers who addressed the people during the day: J. Coleman Ramsey, attorney, Marshall; George M. Priichard, attorney, Asheville; L Z Eller, Cashier Ra n k of Mars Hill, Mars Hill; Leon L. Rico, attorney, Anderaon, S. C; C. 1;. Mashburn, attorney, Mar shall; H C. Johnson, wholesale grocer,. Asheville; Prof. R L Moore, president Mars Hill Col lege, Mars Hill; J. Will Roberts. Register of Deeds, Marshall; Jno A. Hendricks, attorney, Marshall; H. E. Robinson, Sec retary Chamber of Commerce, West Palm Beach, Fla.; Invoca tion, Rev. J. N. Andre . Marshall and Madison county arg proud of this splendid build-. in. This building will stand as a iastins monument to J. J. Red nion. nresiaent i me cams oi French Broad and W. a. Ram- pey, casnier, wno naa me acuve management of. the construction for asies to come. We under stand the building cost about The handsome new KoDerts building recently completed we nderstatid cost about 12,o00 ijsides the s e buildings the Mooiv. Davis, fctnart Lo., store has recently been opened in newlv finishcl building by Mr. E. T. . Worley.' Some, handsome residences-have been bui't The greatest improvement of all "the gravity water system has been-installed at a cost of about $55,000. We believe when this water system gets properly jn operation that Marshall will have the best wacer system in norin Carolina . The water comes from the ; crest . of .the Walnut mountains about -six and one half miles from Marshall Be sides the water system, within the last year Marshall installed an additional 3,500 fet of 6 inch main sewera'. a pipe, built a splendid rok and concrete cul vert to f fike the storm water from t!-a street into theriver an-" --r.de many other substan f.A ipprovements. There should be at once a water main put in ' from the main water line on the hill around on the West Mar shall hill so that the people in that section may have a more abundant supply of water.. There should also be a water; line put across the river, so that the people on the South side of the river' may be supplied with water. There should also be a water line run into the island for the benefit of people stopping in the island and to be used on out door public occasions With a . water line in the island it will ' be probably 4he finest camping place for tourist on the great -Dixie and Wild Cat Highway. At the earliest time possible Marshall should have a public comfort Station and ultimately we hope to see a swimming pool in Marshall; , We must try to utilize the fine supply of water for the comfort 01 the people and the upbuilding of the town. We must not forget that this water system is to be paid for and it should be made self sustaining as far as possible. We believe the water system will be self sustaining in a few years, as soon as all houses in the town are connected And when our population grows as it 7 will we can rednce the water rates and pay the interest and bonds as they fall due. Tell strangers aboutOUr fine water system and our grand scenery and the most scenic building sites m the world. We must have streets and suitable roads. The road up the hill by the school house has been held in abeyance, while some of the other .good , things was put over for Mar- shall. There is probably more local travel over this road than 1 i . any roaa leading into Main street The road at the present time is only a trail in the form of a walk. We believe there should be an 8 foot concrete track built from Main street to , the top of the hill. This will be , cheapest in the end We know that with our limited means all these-" things cannot come at -once. B t let us have something . while we live. We havn't much patience with the dreamer who says, "well these things will come some time but I don't ex pect to live to see them .that spirit will never get anything or anywhere. Let us resolve to have all these things the earliest time possible and see to it with vengeance that the time is near at hand. In going forward let it be un- derstood that there is no room for dead ones in Marshall, that all such must get out of the way or be rnn . over. Several years ago Los Angeles, .Cali fornia, run short on water. It was impossible for the city to grow with out a sufficient supply of good water. The progressive element got together and bonded the city for $250, 00o 000. They then employed competent engi neers They went, back 250 . miles in the mountains and ac tually brought a river across the mountains, over gorges and can yons and' through tunnels ;into the city of Los Angelesi : The result is that rivers of water flow all over Los Angelesr and' since the bringing of that river into Los Angeles it has syown faster than any city in ' the. United . States or eve'n in ; the world. It has grown from about 300.000 to 800,000. : ,yt 1 That 19 what the determina tion Mt Can Be Done" will do. The last two years progress for the town of Marshall has been a record breaker to place it on the map. T h e present authorities for Marshall are progresstve men and we believe they will keep the food work goin g, -
