Massey died soon aft ter nix o'clock', Friday morning, July 13,' 1923. lie was 'stricken suddenly and dangoroii.-ly Wednes day evening, July 11, and notwith standing everything was done, for him that could be, the end came, after .36 hours'bf anxious watching and faithful labor to alleviate his suffering and o, prolong his life. lie was born near .'.Marshall,-. He has been a practicing 'physician for more than ob years and lias had a large practice and gladly rendered his bestservice to the rich and the poor alike " r.Massr-y was a Bapt ist ,and, was educated at Mars Hill College N C, and graduated from medical college of Lpuisville in 1888. ' . 7 lie was a member of the F. & . A. M. and of Uie I. O. 0. F. ', Dr. Massey was Surgeon of the regiment commanded by General L. D. Tyson during the Spanish American War. He served several terms as post master at Serviorvillcr He was jthree times elected State Senator from his district which 'position he held at the time of bis death. In 1910 he was elected to Congress to fill out the unexpired term of the late W. P. Hrownlow. He was then elected to Congress to fill out the unexpired term. of the late Walter IJrownlow, winning the republican nomination over Gover nor Alfred A. Taylor. He held a number of , other im portant public positions and was 1 recognized as a'politiun of ability and 'jnllucr.cp. Robinette. . . An ablc,address on the life and character of the deceased and the opportunity of a physician for ser- vice was delivered by his paator, Rev. It. E Comm. , Dr E "A,- Bishop who has known him intimately and been his close personal friend for eleven years, spoke at length of his life as a'citi- "sen, a physician, a gentleman, a husband ahd father. His life as,a citizen was beauti fully protrayed by Judge A. '. M. Paine who has known him for forty years and been associated with him in business for more than a quarter of a century and who brought out many beautiful traits of character shown by his sacrifices for others and his deep interest in suffering humanity and the public good. nis character as a soldier was pictured by General L. D Tyson of Knoxville, tinder whom he serv ed during the Spanish -American War and wh had excellent and ample- opportunity to learn his real worth. ? General Tyson paid a high tribute to his ability as a surgeon and to his devetion to the welfare of the sick soldiers and he spoke quite feelingly of the strong personal friendship that had, existed between himself and the deceased for the past twenty-five years. Music was furnished by a quar tet cDinposed of Mrs. R. E. Corum Mrs. A. 0. DoLozier and Misses Carrie B. M dice and Faith Robi nettc. , As large a crowd as ever attend ed a funeral in Sevierville was in attendance and expressions of re gret of the unexpected death of Dr. Massey was on every lip. The burial took place at the Shi loh cemetery and was under the auspices of Mountain Star Lodge, 197 F. G A. M. of whichvhe was a member. The floral offerings " were beauti ful and profuse and showed that many in all walks of1ife) delighted to do honor. ' Mrs. Massey and her children have the sympathy of the entire country in the lobs of a kind and indulgent husband and father. If kind words anil beautiful flow- ers take away the sting of death, the sting must have been lightened for Mrs. Massey and her children, for on every hand kind words are heard and a more bountiful or more beautiful floral tribute we have nev er seen. i .
