The art of fire building has be
come a neglected if not a lost art,
It might be thought that any one
could build a fire. That is not
the case. Pt takes ability to mas
ter the art of fire building. The
wood has to be placed in the right
position. The kindling put in the
right place. To build a fire is
no easy matter.
In years gone by the fireplace
was used every day. In the win
ter time it warmed the house. To
build a good winter-fire the back
log had to be placed just right.
The forestick in the right position
and the material in between just
right. The fire for cooking by
the fire place was a little differ
ent. One object for a cooking
fire was to get an abundance of
live coals. It was quite an art to
master fire building in the fire
place or grate. The selection of
the right kind of wood and kind
ling was part of the art
With the coming of the kitchen
range it took know-how to start
a quick fire. Oil was not used for
kindling in that day. There was
the pot-bellied, stove in the front
room, it-, took some more Know-
how to build a fire' in it.
Today people depend on the oil
heater, the thermostat control, the
mechanical 'stoker and the electric
switch. Now even the hardy and
